Boys Cross Country Preview

With the vast majority of runners back from the 2012 season, the Detroit Lakes boys’ cross country team is looking for brighter and better things this coming season.

The Lakers will be led by senior Zach Foltz and junior Matthew Lundstrom, who ran junior varsity last year due to transfer ineligibility rules.

“It remains to be seen who will be our lead runner, because Matthew and Zach are going back and forth and pushing each other in practice,” said DL head coach Bill Kvebak. “I believe both can consistently be top 10 runners in each meet, which is huge for team points.”

The depth of the Lakers is good, as well, with sophomore Austin Askelson, senior Richard Bellefeuille and sophomore Anthony Meyer bringing back varsity experience.

There also is a good injection of youth, with first-time runner junior Paul Stewart, freshmen Brady Labine and Jesse Livermore adding valuable depth.

Two runners are also looking to make contributions down the road after recovering from injuries, senior Isaac Clem and Jake Fritz.

Others who will be in the mix and providing valuable senior leadership will be Mike Richter and Cody Edwards, who has four years of varsity seasoning.

“What we need is to get better every week,” Kvebak said. “We will have our two guys leading the way, with three through seven having to close the gap.”

The Lakers lost the Mid-State Conference last year for the first time in three years and will be focused on nabbing that banner back this year.

The Section 8-2A meet will be in Detroit Lakes at the Lakeview Golf Course Oct. 24.

“The section is always loaded, but we need to start believing we can compete for a section title,” Kvebak said.
