Laker volleyball to rely on seniors

Experience, size and talent will be featured on the front line of the 2013 Detroit Lakes volleyball team and it’s that faction of the game which could propel the Lakers into one of their better seasons in the last several years.

The return of junior Shay Nielsen and senior Trisa Hutchinson will be a solid anchor at the net as middle hitters, while a host of depth has raised big expectations for the team.

“Those two will be a big force in the middle, but we also have the ability to control the net because we do have some good size there, as well,” said DL head coach Jim Wood. “If our passing is on and we can control the ball, we should have some solid attacking.”

Hutchinson and Nielsen each carry in at least two to three years of varsity experience, and the Lakers will be heavily senior laden.

Playing the outside on the net will be senior Jenna Field and junior Sophie Wood, while seniors Hanna Gedrose and Alexis Engkjer will be defensive specialists.

Julia Taylor is a returning senior rightside hitter.

“We’ll have some aggressive hitters,” Wood said.

“We also have some good, solid younger players who will add depth to the team,” said assistant coach Kara Meier. “We also should have a stronger defense and have a higher level of pursuit on the ball.”

With the experience coming back, the goals have risen, with the Section 8-3A championship game in the Lakers’ sights.

“The girls are shooting to make the Section championship game and then from there, anything can happen,” Wood said. “We are by far the smallest school in the section, so we’ll be playing that underdog card.”

The Lakers should also be in the mix for the Mid-State Conference title.

The Lakers open the season Tuesday in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, while the season’s home opener will be Thursday, with Bemidji coming to town.

Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
