Girls Cross Country: DL runners finish 8th overall as team

There’s still plenty of work to do for the Detroit Lakes girls’ cross country team, but now they have a marker to start working for after finishing eighth during the Laker Rotary Invite Thursday at the Lakeview Golf Course.

The meet attracted the top Section 8-2A teams, since the Lakers will be hosting the section meet, making Thursday’s race a nice warm up.

And it was warm, with temperatures soaring over 80 degrees.

But the heat didn’t deter senior Megan Ostlie, who was the first Laker in at 21st with a time of 17:17.7.

“Megan had a good first 1,600 meters, but it almost looked like she ran out of gas towards the end,” said DL head girls’ coach Jon Freeman. “But we are working our girls out so they will feel tired midway through their races.”

Ostlie’s sister, Mackenzie, finished in 36th with a mark of 17:59.7, while being followed in by Sarah Schumacher (40th), Mackenzie Foltz (44th) and Rachel Wentz (18:33.9).

The final two DL runners included Haley Groth (57th) and Kendra Kvebak (67th).

“I thought heading into the meet, a fifth-place finish would have been a stellar one, so I was a little disappointed finishing eighth,” Freeman said. “But after watching how the girls ran, they improved over last week’s meet and ran as a group.”

The group running came by DL’s third through fifth slot runners, as Schumacher, Foltz and Wentz were just 21 seconds apart.

“The difference from our top runner to our fifth runner last week was 3:05, but Thursday they were with 1:16 of each other,” Freeman added. “That’s a vast improvement and it shows they are running better.”

The course was changed a bit, with the start and finish different from past years. It will be the same course for the section meet, as well.

“We have a long ways to go, but our goal is to be around at the end of the season,” Freeman said. “We are bringing our kids along slower than most teams do. I expect the runners to be running tired for the next three to four weeks.”

Anne Holzgrove also earned her varsity spot back and will run with the top team Thursday in Little Falls, which starts at 4:15 p.m.
