Cross Country: Lakers compete well in Fergus Falls Invitational

There were some solid placings by the Detroit Lakes cross country teams, as they competed in the Fergus Falls Invite Thursday.

The Laker girls finished fourth, despite running on some tired legs after a busy two weeks, while the boys finished in eighth place.

Mackenzie Ostlie remained as one of DL’s top runners, after she finished 15th overall with a time of 16:57.8, on a course which was much more difficult than the last two meets.

“Mackenzie Ostlie continues to do a great job as the front runner and had to overcome some stomach ailment,” said DL head girls’ coach Jon Freeman.

Sarah Schumacher finished in the top 20 in 18th at 17:08.2, while Mackenzie Foltz took 28th at 17:31.7, Rachel Wentz 31st at 17:38.7 and Anne Holzgrove 32nd with a mark of 17:39.7.

Rounding out DL’s lineup was Heather Kunkel in 39th and Kendra Kvebak in 50th.

“I thought the kids looked tired,” said DL head girls’ coach Jon Freeman. “Having to fight with some colds and allergies, made the training tough. Sarah Schumacher keeps on putting up good performances, but we are still waiting for her to have a bust-out meet.

“The one through seven spread keeps on being very good, though.”

Sartell won the team title, while Alexandria’s Megan and Bethany Hasz were first and second, respectively, with times of 14:23.9 and 14:24.4.

The Laker boys were led in by Zach Foltz, who placed 11th with a time of 17:46.6.

“Zach ran a great race,” said DL head boys’ coach Bill Kvebak. “He ran with some kids he has been behind the last few meets and was able to compete with them.”

Austin Askelson was the next Laker in at 39th, while Brady Labine was third at 47th. Other finishers included Aaron Johnson in 49th, Paul Stewart in 50th, Connor Haugrud in 56th and Anthony Meyer in 60th.

“Paul Stewart has been running very well the past two weeks,” Kvebak said. “He is really good at formulating a game plan and executing it. Connor Haugrud saw his first varsity action this season, joining four other freshmen who have seen varsity action (Jesse Livermore, Labine, Zach Buboltz and Johnson).”

Alexandria won the team competition, while Fergus Falls’ Connor Danielson won the race with a 16:46.0 time.

The Lakers will be in the Perham Invite Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.
