Girls Hockey: Lakers start season on positive note

The 2013-14 season opener went well for the Detroit Lakes girls’ hockey team, as they picked up a point in the section standings with a 2-2 tie against visiting Fergus Falls Saturday.

The Lakers struck first and second in the first period, on goals by senior forward Annikka Anderson and sophomore forward Hailey Sonstegard.

But the Otters were able to notch a goal in the second period by Lauren Norgren and the tying goal in the third by Annie Magnusson on a power play effort.

The Lakers were able to control the overtime period, putting five goals on net to the Otters’ two, but the score remained a 2-2 tie.

“Overall, I thought we played well,” said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. “It was a fun game to watch. At times we did a good job of controlling the play and ended up outshooting them (28-22).

“We definitely had some opportunities, but struggled to capitalize on them. Veronica Badurek played well in the net for us after getting hit early on the game.”

Game two of the season didn’t go as well, as the Lakers lost to Thief River Falls Tuesday by the score of 11-0.

The Prowlers (1-0) went 3-4 on their power plays, while having four players score two goals each in Emily Bergland, Briana Jorde, Brandi Malwitz and Ava Marolt.

With Laker starting goalie Veronica Badurek out with a knee injury, Haileigh Wenger played in net and had nine saves.

The Lakers will host Alexandria (2-0) Friday for a 7 p.m. start.
