Nordic Skiing Preview: Lakers look to progress through 2013-14 season

For the first season in a while, the Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ Nordic skiing teams will have a good chance of finishing a full schedule, after several seasons of low amounts of snow.

The Lakers will be looking to progress through the months of December through January to set up their Section 8-1A meet Feb. 4, at Camp Ripley.

One Laker skier who will be looking to return to state after a year furlough is Berit Ramstad-Skoyles, who took a year off as a foreign exchange student to Chile, South America.

“Berit is excited to get back into it and jump right in,” said DL head coach Dan Josephson. “She has skied four times the last two years, so it may take a little time to get back to where she left off.”

Ramstad-Skoyles has already qualified for the state meet three times and will use the regular season to get her skies back underneath her and try for No. 4 in sections.

Senior Lyndsey Baker will also be back after skiing last year, while Madeline Lembke, Sydney and sophomores Bridget Bergen and Haley Groth will pick up seasoning as the year progresses.

“We will have a difficult time filling out a full varsity team early on, but will be able to as the season goes on,” Josephson said.

The Laker boys will be top-heavy with three experienced and skilled skiers in seniors Zach Foltz and Anthony Myer, along with leading skier from last year in sophomore Austin Askelson.

“Our top three will be neck-and-neck and if we can get some good points from our No. 4 skier, that will move us around in team placings in meetS,” Josephson said.

The Lakers will open the season Dec. 14, in Bemidji and have their home meet at Maplelag Resort Dec. 19.
