Wrestling: Jackson and Huwe place in Rumble

The Detroit Lakes wrestling team finished 19th out of 69 teams in the highly-competitive Rumble on the Red tournament, held inside the Fargodome Friday and Saturday.

Apple Valley was the tournament champion with 343 points, while Frazee was 14th at 74.5. The Lakers accumulated a team score of 67.

“This is an extremely tough tournament, which draws the top wrestlers from Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott.

“Some weight classes had 15 or more wrestlers who are ranked in the top 10 of their states’ weight classes, which makes this tournament in some respects, tougher than the state tournament.”

The Lakers had two place winners with junior Parker Jackson taking fourth at 152 pounds after going 6-2, while sophomore heavyweight James Huwe was eighth after going 4-3.

Other Lakers who won matches, but didn’t place, included Jarett Nosal (2-2), Logan Twigg (1-2), Kirby Siewert (1-2), Nathan Francis (2-2) and Marcus Jasken (1-2).

“I felt it was a great experience for our athletes,” Ullyott said.

“The guys who went deep in the tournament with four or more matches are able to experience the grind of a very competitive event with every match against a quality opponent.

“This experience should help prepare them for the competition level they will be faced with at the end of the year at the section and state tournaments.  Another thing we can take out of a tournament like the rumble is that our strengths and weaknesses are easy to identify and give us some focus as we move into our next part of the season.”

There also was a JV tournament in conjunction with the varsity event.

The JV team placed 34th out of 69 teams.

“Many of those weight classes were also very competitive with some brackets having over 64 wrestlers entered in them,” Ullyott said.

“We had no place winners, but the kids wrestled great.”

The Laker JV results were:  Fabian Greer 1-2, Payton Jackson 2-2, Sean Lundeen 3-2, Trey Greer 4-2, Bryant Swiers 4-2, Jordan Mackner 1-2, Manuel Plaza 1-2, Tanner Schnathorst 2-2, Mike Renteria 3-2.
