Gymnastics: Lakers don’t miss a beat to start off 2014

Despite taking part in their first competitive meet in over two weeks and losing their top gymnast due to injury, the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team didn’t miss a beat in notching a season-high 146.15 Tuesday against visiting Little Falls (124.175), inside the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics facility.

With top performer Molly Lyngaas missing the meet due to a lower leg injury, the Lakers used their superior depth to fill in, and excelled in the first meet of the 2014 portion of the season.

The key to the win and high score came on beam, where the Lakers had just one fall in all their routines, while scoring a season-best 36.8 in the event.

“Just about everyone had a nine-plus score, so all the girls did well on the beam,” said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. “We are still lacking on the bars, yet, so we need to keep working there.”

Jordyn Peterson got back into the action after missing the last few meets by scoring a 9.475 on beam for second, while teammate Emma Disse hit a 9.25. Cora Okeson also recorded a 9.2.

Alexis Yliniemi continued her strong performance on vault with a first-place score of 9.45, while Peterson won the floor with a strong 9.4, followed by Disse’s 9.3 and Ally Berg’s 9.25.

Okeson and Leah Chavez did well on bars, with a 9.3 and 9.0, respectively.

The Lakers continue their schedule with a meet in Moorhead Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

With the Lakers averaging a 145, they are ranked No. 4 in Class 1A.

“If we can continue on that pace, we will be right up there with the top teams in the state,” Zamzo said. “We just need to continue on with what we are doing.”
