Girls Hockey: Lakers have frustrating tie with W-DC

A three-goal third period by the Wadena-Deer Creek/Long Prairie-Grey Eagle girls’ hockey team stunned the visiting Detroit Lakes Lakers Thursday evening, with the final tally being a Mid-State Conference 3-3 tie.

Despite heavily outshooting the home team by a 53-15 margin, the Laker’s 3-0 lead dissipated quickly in the final period, as the Blue Demons converted all their shots on goal into scores.

It took almost the entire regulation time for W-DC to pull up to a tie, as Zara Einerwold scored with just three seconds later to force overtime, in which DL outshot the Blue Demons 5-3.

“We played very well the first two periods,” said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. “We really came out and set the tone in the first, applying good offensive pressure, and really controlled play.

“Unfortunately, we made some bad decisions in the third period and allowed W-DC back into the game.”

The Lakers were struck by the injury bug after losing defensive player Emily Schiltz to a finger injury midway through the second period.

That forced DL to skate three defensive players through the final periods and the overtime frame.

“I think eventually our fatigue caught up with us and we ran out of gas, both physically and mentally,” Norby said.

Laker forward Hailey Sonstegard kept in scoring form, though, notching a pair of goals in the second period, while Hannah Rhodes converted the third.

Sonstegard’s first goal came on a short-handed unassisted effort, while assists went to Randa Larsen and Chandra Johnson.

The Lakers outshot W-DC by a combined 33-6 margin in the first two periods, but Blue Demon goalie Angela Hanson was up to the task, with a total of 50 saves.

“(Hanson) played well for them and props to their defensive effort of not letting us get in there for rebounds,” Norby said.

DL goalie Veronica Badurek had 12 saves in the game, as well.

McKenzie Christianson had W-DC’s other two goals in the third period.

“Overall, our offensive effort was great last night, we were aggressive on the puck, took away WDC time and space and forced turnover after turnover,” Norby said. “Our defensive players are coming along; they have provided some good offensive opportunities for us and have been doing a pretty good job of getting the puck out of the defensive zone. Games like last night (Thursday) are tough for Veronica, as she really has to stay focused after going almost 25 minutes without a shot on goal.

“She made some nice saves for us, though. We are young and so we continue to strive for that consistency in play, but I have confidence in them and know they will continue to get better.”

Sonstegard leads DL with 12 goals on the season, and is developing into an offensive weapon for the Lakers, Norby said.

“Hailey is becoming a real scoring threat for us,” the DL coach said. “She handles the puck well and really gets her head to pick her shot. There have only been a few times she has been all alone in front and she hasn’t scored.

“She is going to continue to be that threat for us, especially as the players on her line gain some confidence and fire power; I think they could be a dangerous offensive line.”

The Lakers (4-5-3) will be in action against Crookston inside Kent Freeman Arena Thursday, starting at 7:15 p.m.
