Sporting a No. 4 ranking in Class 1A, the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team continued to score in the mid-140’s with their 144.5 to 134 win over visiting Moorhead Tuesday inside the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics facility.

Once again, the Lakers excelled on vault and floor, while looking to get better on bars, which is an event which can propel them to higher scores.

Freshman Molly Lyngaas returned from a minor leg injury to lead the Lakers in all-around with a first-place score of 36.75.

“She did well, but it was just a coming-back kind of routine for her,” said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. “Molly just took it nice and safe tonight.”

She gathered a first on bars with a 9.45, while taking second on floor (9.35) to teammate Jordyn Peterson, who had a 9.55.

Seventh grader Alexis Yliniemi held her status as DL’s top vaulter with a 9.45, while junior teammate Allison Berg notched a 9.4 for second and Lyngaas came in with a 9.35 for third.

Although Moorhead’s Maren Seljevold won the beam with a solid score of 9.4, DL took the next four spots, led by Peterson’s 9.2 and eighth grader Emma Disse’s 9.1.

“We had two falls on beam, which hurts the overall scores,” Zamzo added.

The Lakers will host Perham Friday, which will be another big showdown between the two state-ranked teams.

That will set up DL for the State True Team, which invites the top teams in the state. The meet is next Saturday.

“It would be nice to pop off a 146 or 147 Friday or at True Team, but we are a young team, yet, so it will come,” Zamzo said. “I know if we can get up there in the range, the confidence will definitely rise for the girls.”

DL’s meet against visiting Perham will start at 6 p.m. inside the Flyers Gymnastics facility.
