The Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ Nordic ski teams took part in the Mesabi East Invitational Saturday, which attracted over 1,200 competitors.

The Mesabi East Invitational is the largest one-day cross country meet in the country.

They start two racers every 30 seconds. Skiers come from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

The premier skiers in the region compete in this race.

The Laker girls were led by junior Berit Ramstad Skoyles, as she placed 39th of 187 girls in the classic varsity race.

Her time was 21:46.6, 3:05 behind the winner.

Lindsay Baker placed 185th with a time of 31:30.4.

The course is essentially 4K uphill followed by a 1K descent.

Laker senior Zach Foltz placed 65th in the boys varsity freestyle event.

There were 197 skiers, and Foltz was 2:14.8 behind the leader, with a time of 16:31.5.

Jinhyun Park placed 179th, with a time of 20:51.5.

Freestyle is sometimes called “skating.”  It is generally a faster technique than the classic method.

The freestyle race was on the silver course, one punctuated by grueling uphill climbs with intimidating names such as “Triple Threat.”

Like the gold course, the silver course was designed to serve as an Olympic training ground.

Bridget Bergen skied the girls’ freestyle event and placed 167th of 182.  Mason VanGerpen skied JV boys freestyle and placed 66th of 98.

Austin Askelson also skied the classic race.  He placed 52nd of 193 with a time of 18.27.6, 2:42.1 behind the leader.

The Lakers will be at Camp Ripley Thursday for a 10 a.m. start.
