Girls Basketball: Lakers on 4-game winning streak

A 58-36 Mid-State Conference win by the Detroit Lakes girls’ basketball team over Crosby-Ironton, was keyed by a 12-2 run at the 13-minute mark in the second half, which stretched a 23-18 halftime advantage into a comfortable 20-point lead.

The win keeps the Lakers (8-4) undefeated in conference play at 3-0, which is tied with Pequot Lakes and a half game behind Staples-Motley, which is 4-0.

The bench sparked the Lakers’ 12-2 run, as guard Kyra Vagle and Grace Swenson each hit three-pointers, while junior point guard Kyley Foster put DL up 23-18 at half with a buzzer-beating trey.

“Kyley really controlled the game, making great decisions and knocking down shots,” said DL head coach Mike Hoganson.

“Shay Nielsen also had 14 points, despite constant double teams.”

Foster finished with a game-high 17 points, while Vagle had nine and senior post Trisa Hutchinson contributed eight.

The Lakers will travel to Pequot Lakes (9-4) Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
