Dance: Lakers peak at sections

The Detroit Lakes Dance Team put out its best performance Saturday, as the Lakers put up a good fight in a very tough section meet.

The Lakers put on a display, highlighted by their focus on their routines, but just missed finishing in the top half of the section.

“We narrowly missed the top half in our section,” said DL head coach Britton Ramsey. “Places five through seven were all very close, as were places one through four.

“Our entire section was shook up this year, with the St. Cloud area schools dominating five of the top six places, and not much room in between each place.”

The meet started off well, and continued through each of the jazz and high kick performances.

But with the section being one of the toughest in the state, with two to three of the teams usually making the state finals, there was virtually no room for error.

“Our girls had their absolute best performance of the season,” Ramsey said. “They went in very focused, and calculated every movement. I think it was an eye opening experience for our rookies, who hadn’t really seen any teams in our section before.

“In the first 10 seconds of the dance we spotlight two dancers that do five pirouettes, and they have struggled getting their timing synchronized at times this season,” Ramsey included. “But at sections, they hit it perfectly together and everyone went crazy. It set the team off on the right track and they continued to hit skill after skill. So it was a very exciting moment for our jazz team.”

The Lakers will have one more performance Saturday at the DLHS, starting at 7 p.m.
