Swimming & Diving: Lakers 2nd team pulls out win in Thief River Falls

The youthful side of the Detroit Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team was on display in Thief River Falls Thursday, as head coach Rian Heimark brought just the junior varsity to face the Prowlers in the regular season finale.

It still didn’t matter, as the Lakers rang up an 88-78 win.

“The boys really stepped it up for this meet, because they knew it was their last chance to qualify for the section meet,” Heimark said. “I felt it was a great confidence booster for our younger, and less experienced, swimmers. Not only did they post great times, but they had the opportunity to show what the future holds for Laker swimming and diving.”

The Lakers won just three events, but their depth proved vital in taking the other top places.

Ethan McCullough won the 100 freestyle with a sub-minute time of 57.18, while Austin Nelson was victorious in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:15.07. Teammate Quinn Bakken was second in the race at 1:23.85.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Josten Bellefeuille, Landon Lindsey, Elliot Musielewicz and Tristan Johnson won, barely nipping out their teammates and second-place finishers Bakken, Lance Parzyck, Connor Haugrud and McCullough.

The Lakers will gear up for the Section 6-1A meet in Alexandria starting Friday and running through Saturday.
