Track and Field: Laker teams bust out in Thief River Falls

The Detroit Lakes track and field teams are starting to rise to the top after the Laker girls won the Thief River Falls Invite and the boys finished second.

The Laker girls won seven events, including all three sprinting events and both throwing competitions.

Allison Berg won the 100-meter dash with a 13.26, while Lindsey Heinecke took each the 200 and 400 dash events.

Junior Shay Nielsen won both the shot put (43-05 and discus (118-05).

“I was very pleased with the efforts from our girls yesterday,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “I thought every athlete we brought along, from seniors to eight graders, had a great day.”

Megan Ostlie ran her first 3,200 meters of the year, and had an outstanding time of 11:39.08.

“Only Hanna Grinaker has run a faster 3,200 meters in DL history,” Labine added. “We challenged Lindsey Heinecke to really compete at a different level, and she definitely did that.”

Berg won the high jump and long jump, along with the 100 dash.

“I thought Allison Berg had a great day,” Labine said. “We put Allison in the 100 meters to see if that was a possible True Team event for her, and she won the race.

Abby Ullyott had her best day of the year with a fifth-place finish in the 300 hurdles.

“She has been working hard in practice and it definitely showed yesterday,” Labine said. “I’m very excited about seeing how fast she can run this season.”

Several of DL’s freshmen athletes had huge personal best marks, as well.

“They maybe did not make the top eight places, but are showing great improvement and are not far away from cracking our varsity line-up,” Labine said. “I think the team scores showed how talented this team is and how we are really excited about the possibilities coming up at True Team and the Mid-State Conference meet.”

The Laker boys had a pair of victories by Matthew Lundstrom, who won each the 1,600 (4:30.50) and the 800 (2:04.09).

Senior Zach Foltz was second in the 3,200 run, while Jonathan Hallisey was second in the long jump.
