It was a gathering of some of the top track and field athletes in the state, as a contingent of Detroit Lakes competitors were invited to the prestigious Hamline Elite Meet Saturday.

The meet, which is held at Hamline University in St. Paul, the site for the MSHSL state meet, hosts some of the top athletes in both Class 1A and 2A.

Several of the Lakers made their marks, as junior Shay Nielsen proved to be one of the elite shot putters in the state by finishing second with a distance of 43-08.

Nielsen finished second to Lakeville South senior Shaina Burns, who took top honors with a 44-06.

“Shay’s second-place finish really shows she is one of the best throwers in the state,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “All of her hard work is definitely paying off.”

Junior Lindsey Heinecke finished with a bronze in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.82, as Jedah Caldwell of Centennial won with a 25.22 and Eagan’s Maddie Gourley was second at 25.79.

“Lindsey was seeded ninth coming into the race, so she was all the way out in lane nine, which is a very difficult place to race from,” Labine said. “I was very happy with her race.”

Junior Allison Berg was seventh in the long jump with a mark of 16-07.

“Once we stretch out Allison’s runway, she is going to have some huge jumps later this season,” Labine added.

The boys 4x800 and the girls 4x200 ran their fastest times of the year and finished eighth overall.

“Both relays showed that fit right in with the best teams in the state of Minnesota,” Labine said.

The 4x800 boys’ team included Matthew Lundstrom, Zach Foltz, Brady Labine and Jacob Fritz.

The girls’ four included Addie Kay Johnson, Berg, Halbakken and Heinecke.

Lundstrom also finished 12th overall in the 1,600 run with a time of 4:29.57.
