Smith takes Mid-State medalist

The Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team had a shot fly across their bow Tuesday, after the Lakers’ closest win in quite some time.

The Class 2A top-ranked Lakers earned a nice victory – their 29th in a row – in the Red Wing Invite, beating New Prague by two strokes and host Red Wing by four.

Red Wing has been bumped back down to Class 2A, so they are a team to keep close tabs on as the Lakers are heavy favorites to three-peat as state champions.

“It was an eye opener for the team,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier. “The tournament was very competitive, as well, with the top 15 scores under 80. But having a close meet was good for the girls, but they approached the meet like any other and played their game.”

The Lakers still shot a 313, which by normal standards, will win the majority of meets.

New Prague’s Taylor Ledwein set a new course record with her six-under par 66, while the highest ranking by a Laker was senior Natalie Roth, who tied for sixth with a two-over 74.

But the Lakers’ depth was again the key, as senior Emma Thompson carded a 79 for 10th, followed by Kate Smith’s and Matty Tschider’s 80, Trisa Hutchinson’s 81 and Sydney Busker’s 89.

“Shooting an 80 is still a good score, but I know all the girls want to shoot in the 70’s, so they are not satisfied,” Harrier said. “Our next goal is to break 300 as a team.”

The Lakers also won the Mid-State Conference championship Monday at the Detroit Country Club, which was played under some nasty conditions.

Rain and cold temperatures raised the scores a bit, but five of the Lakers still earned All-Conference honors, led by Smith’s two-under par 69, which snagged her medalist honors.

Other DL All-Conference golfers included Roth (79), Hutchinson (79), Thompson (79) and Busker (81).

Tschider missed the meet with the flu, which has made its trek through the Laker team already.

“It was good to see five of our players make All-Conference and Matty felt bad she couldn’t play in her final conference tournament,” Harrier said.

The Lakers also played in the Jordan Invite, which is played at the Class 2A state meet site of The Ridges and Sand Creek, this past weekend.

DL dominated the first day with a 314, with Pequot Lakes in second at 342, while the second day included just nine holes with the Lakers recording a 158 for a final tally of 472.

Smith won medalist honors with a one-over par 73 Friday and a 35 Saturday for a 108.

Fourth through sixth went to DL players in Tschider (122), Hutchinson (125) and Thompson (126).

“It was another opportunity to play the state course and the girls made their adjustments well,” Harrier said.

With the season having a Helter Skelter pace, with long drawn out gaps in between a cramped schedule, the Lakers are still just looking to get into a regular season routine.

“Our one thing we’ve struggled with has been our putting, that needs to improve,” Harrier said. “We just need to get back into the groove of things and that means just getting back on the course on a consistent basis.”

The Lakers will play in the St. Cloud Invite Thursday and will play in Fergus Falls Friday and Saturday as a split squad.

The starting team will travel to Duluth Saturday. The Lakers will host their invite at the DCC Tuesday, starting at 1:30 p.m.
