Laker girls’ golf wins 32nd straight

With the Sub-Section and Section 8-2A meets right around the corner, the top-ranked Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team is still looking to put “that one meet” together.

There are still goals to be met before the Lakers pursue their third-straight Class 2A state championship, as the team collected its 32nd straight tournament win by taking the DL Invite Tuesday at the Detroit Country Club with a 309.

“Our main goal is to make improvements each day and do the little things right, because that’s what is important,” said senior Natalie Roth, who finished second to teammate Kate Smith Tuesday with a three-over par 74. “As a team, we are still looking to break that 300 mark, but the weather has been difficult this season, because it’s hard to shoot low when it’s down pouring.”

Smith – who was state co-medalist last year with Roth - shot a two-over par 73 to garner medalist honors, as senior Emma Thompson was fifth with an 80.

The fourth score counted was senior Trisa Hutchinson’s 82, followed by senior Matty Tschider’s 83 and Sydney Busker’s 84.

The Lakers also won the Duluth Invite Saturday with their 312, with Edina in second with a 333.

Roth tied Edina’s Hannah Hankinson with a three-over par 75 for medalist laurels, while Hutchinson and Busker were tied for third with a 78 and Thompson was sixth with an 81.

Smith shot an 84 and Tschider an 85.

With only one meet left in the regular season, which is a dual with Pequot Lakes at Wildflower Golf Course Thursday, the Lakers are priming themselves for their third state championship run, along with a few other marks in mind, as well.

“We still want to break 300, which we have consistently been around all season,” Smith said. “We are all still striving to get better.”

But the Lakers are still looking for deeper goals than breaking 300, with the all-time meet record in their sites, as well, which is 291 set by Minnewaska.

With several meets postponed or played under extreme weather conditions, the DL squad have not had ideal conditions to shoot for that 291.

But it’s still out there.

“It’s in the back of our minds,” Roth said of the 291 mark. “All six of us have potential to shoot under par on any given day. What we need is just to have four of us to shoot like that and I believe we still have it in us.”

The reality still persists the Lakers are heavy favorites to repeat as state champions and the bar is set very high for this group of dominating golfers.

But DL head coach Cali Harrier wants to keep this season in perspective, which will be the last for four of the seniors.

“I remind them to enjoy this and have fun,” Harrier said. “These scores they are posting are still very good; they are consistently around the 300 mark. I know they want more, but they have to remember to enjoy this season, be proud of what they are accomplishing.”

“We can’t take anything for granted,” Smith added. “We need to keep practicing hard and just play our own game and not worry about other teams.

“We are waiting for the stars to align when we can have four of us go low.”
