Laker duo take part in summer tennis
Recently, two Detroit Lakes’ boys’ tennis players competed in the Annie Gjesdal Memorial Tennis Tournament in Wahpeton, ND.
Chandler Hanks and Alex Fondrick played in both the doubles and singles categories against opponents from across ND and the Twin Cities.
In singles, Hanks won the first round over Nathan Young from West Fargo (6-2, 6-3).
However, he fell to the eventual first-runner-up, Dallas Chambers of Grand Forks (6-0,6-3), in the semi-finals.
Also in the first round of singles, Fondrick fell to Charlie Weill of St. Paul in a great match (7-5, 6-3), but the meeting would prove to be beneficial.
Fondrick and Weill decided to combine their efforts playing doubles a couple weeks later in Fargo at the Pepsi Invitational.
Although he lost to Weill in the first round, Fondrick would gain the consolation Championship by readily handling his next two opponents (6-3, 6-0) and (6-2, 6-1).
Hanks and Fondrick also performed well together at doubles taking the second place trophy after an intense Championship match against the No. 1 seed, Dallas Chambers and Ethan Comeau, both of Grand Forks.
After winning the first set, Detroit Lakes lost in a close tie breaker (4-6, 6-4, 10-6).
