Soccer: Laker boys continue shutout streak over Otters

DETROIT LAKES — The Laker boys soccer team shutout Fergus Falls 2-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday at Rotary Fields.

The DL blanking is the fourth consecutive shutout of Fergus Falls dating back to a 2-2 tie between the two clubs Aug. 25, 2011. The Lakers have outscored Fergus Falls 15-nil in those four matches.

“The team is young and little bit inexperienced,” Head Coach Justin Wegleitner said. “Very pleased with the way they came out tonight to start out the season.”

DL began the game playing tentatively and Fergus Falls controlled play for the first 10 minutes, but the Lakers turned the game around controlling play more than half the time the remainder of the contest.

Junior Carson Sonstegard came off the bench midway through the first half and scored the game-winner a minute later from the right edge of the penalty area beating Otter goalkeeper Nick Weaver for a 1-0 lead. Tanner Steele picked up the assist.

“He (Sonstegard) got a nice shot from the outside,“ said Wegleitner. “Good position…nice to see him pick up the team like that.”

“I was probably lucky, I guess,” Sonstegaard said. “It was a good chance. Right place and right time.”

DL keeper Connor Johnson turned aside a penalty kick in the 85th minute after a foul in the box gave Mitchell Cole a chance to cut into the DL lead late.

Cole’s shot bounced off the left post and ricocheted off the side of Johnson’s neck and head.

Johnson stopped a scoring drive early in the second half with a diving save to keep the goose egg on the board and punched out a corner kick to thwart a late Otter push to the net.

Other than those three attempts, Johnson was not tested most of the night.

“Not too much,” Johnson said. “That’s always good…means our defense is playing good. They didn’t let the ball into the 18 too much…(Fergus Falls) had some opportunities, but not like we had.”

“He’s going to have to come up big all season for us because he’s got a lot of inexperience in front of him,” Wegleitner said.

DL returns only two starters from last year’s defensive unit.

“We had some big leaders last year, so he’s going to have some work,” said Wegleitner.

Garret Armstrong played well cleaning up the middle and assisting Johnson deep in the DL end.

Our midfield stepped in to sew up the defense, Wegleitner said.

Logan Larson put the Lakers up 2-0 with an assist from Armstrong on a ball that should have been stopped by Weaver, but eluded the Fergus goaltender allowing Larson to score easily.

DL has Friday off before playing their first road game at Alexandria (1-0) Saturday, Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. The Cardinals won their home opener over East Grand Forks 1-0 Thursday.

Game notes: DL shut out Fergus Falls 5-0 to open last year’s campaign on the road and eliminated the Otters 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs. In 2012-13, DL won the only meeting between the clubs 4-0.
