Football preview: No. 5 Lakers travel to Roseau Friday for conference opener

ROSEAU — Detroit Lakes (1-0) travels to Roseau (1-0) to face the Rams Friday night at Reuben J. Halverson field and the Lakers will hit the road with the No. 5 ranking in Class 4A after opening the season with a 20-point blanking of the Fargo North Spartans at Mollberg Field.

The Lakers overcame a slow start and some typical first game foibles and established a successful running game rushing for more than 300 yards, half of that by tailback Parker Jackson, who had a big game up the middle for 159 yards.

DL showcased four ball carriers, all of differing specialties, putting the Fargo North defense on their collective heels as the game progressed.

"We've got another one who is ready to go that we haven't put out there yet," Laker Head Coach Flint Motschenbacher said after the win.

Fullback Forrest Schleske was solid in short yardage situations and also stopped a North drive with an interception on defense.

Ryan Cihak ranged around the formation proving a valuable weapon running the ball and as a target for quarterback Christian Hedstrom accumulating 90 yards, 60 on the ground.

Sam Champa busted a 49-yard run from scrimmage and just missed the century mark rushing for 94 yards at ten yards a clip on nine rushes.

To stop the Lakers it’s going to have to happen at the line, like so many other successful Laker teams of the past. DL ran so effectively because of the play of a sturdy offensive line and in the opener they provided holes around the end and more importantly straight up the gut consistently.

The Laker defense stymied Fargo North leaving any threatening scoring opportunities to the Spartans on uncomfortable fourth downs in the few North trips to the red zone.

Roseau scored 21 unanswered points on the way to beating rival Warroad 21-6 to win the Wooden Nickel traveling trophy in their opening game.

Trailing 6-0, the Rams answered twice before half time, the first on a 26-yard Alec Valenzuela run with 4:05 to go before the half. Three minutes later, Valenzuela scored again on a 55-yard run. Casey Warner sealed the win for Roseau on a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Valenzuela matched Parker Jackson’s effort finishing the game with 159 yards on 18 carries.

Both teams started the season with an air of inexperience clouding expectations and answered the call in the first game by doing what every football team needs to do to win: establish the running game and play solid defense.

For those interested in traveling to the game in Roseau, there is a charter bus available. Contact Detroit Lakes high school for more information at 218-847-4491. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
