The Laker gymnasts had a tight finish to best the top team in Class AA as the Class A defending champion Lakers continued their season-long win streak at the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Officials Assocation Classic at Park Center high school Saturday.

Detroit Lakes defeated Lakeville North by two-tenths of a point 147.2 - 147.0.

“Our vaulting really helped us out in the end,” DL head coach Steve Zamzo said. “We were very close to Lakeville North the whole meet. They had some falls on the bars and that hurt them.  We need to up our competition on bars and beam. We will get that chance on Tuesday in Moorhead.”

The Lakers’  Peyton Jernberg (9.675) and Lexi Yliniemi (9.65) placed third and fourth on vault behind all-around champion Chaney Neu of Champlin Park (9.75) and Lakeville North’s Rachel Steiner (9.725).

DL’s floor team had three gymnasts in the top six. Cora Okeson and Yliniemi were awarded scores of 9.6 each to place behind only all-around runner-up Anna Altermatt of Lakeville North’s 9.7. The defending Class A floor champ, Emma Disse, was the third Laker with a sixth place score of 9.425.

Molly Lyngaas had a runner-up finish on bars scoring 9.375. North’s Delaney Gipp won the event with a 9.5; Altermatt took bronze (9.275). Hegg had a 9.0 routine for seventh place.

Hegg and Okeson performed in the all-around and placed fifth and sixth, individually.

DL gymnasts were on the fringe of the top 10 on beam. Hegg and Okeson had the top Laker finishes: Okeson in 10th (9.075); Hegg 12th (9.05). Alexis Ostlie scored a 9.0 to finish behind Hegg in 13th place overall.

The Lakers take on the Spuds in Moorhead Tuesday, Jan. 10. Saturday, they travel to Lakeville North for a rematch with the Panthers and many of the top teams in both class A and AA.

“This will be a very good meet to watch,” said Zamzo. “Lakeville North is looking to redeem themselves from our last two meetings. They have been close to us. They will be very motivated Saturday. Along with them is Melrose. They have continued to get better and have a very good gymnast returning from injury to compete.”

Melrose was the Class A runners-up to DL last year and are currently ranked No. 2.
