Little Falls’ skiers raced to the finish line first in both Nordic races at the Detroit Lakes Invitational held at Detroit Mountain Tuesday.

Brainerd captured the team title in the boys race while the Flyers edged Alexandria in the girls race.

Conditions were cold and windy with racers getting a break from the winter breeze as they entered the natural trails while fresh snow on a hard surface made for challenging skiing on the hilly 6k course .

AARON JOHNSON

Defending section champion Hunter Zupko of Little Falls continued his dominance having won both races in DL this season. He won by 20 seconds skiing a time of 19:34.2. Brainerd’s Evan Storbakken was the runner-up (19:54) and his teammate Gabe Raguse was third (19:55.6) to lead the Warriors to first place.

The Lakers’ Aaron Johnson placed 16th in a time of 22:39. Jack Richards was the second DL skier to cross the finish line in 25:00.7. The DL boys team, including AJ Lindquist (52nd - 27:25.5) and Aaron Oakes (53rd - 27:47.8) placed sixth in the eight-team field.

The DL girl's’ team of Ellen Teiken, Anna Schumacher and Hope Weidemann also placed sixth.

Teiken had the top finish in 26th place with a time of 29:38.5. Schumacher was 40th (36:31.0) and Weidemann 43rd (53:17.8).

ELLEN TEIKEN

Little Falls’ Kendal Hendrickson cruised to victory winning by over a minute (23:54) over Alexandria’s Kaisa Bosek (25:04.6). Hendrickson also won last year’s section race at Maplelag.

In the boys junior varsity race, Jacob Trout led the Laker boys in 15th place (20:46.2) on a 5.5k course. DL did not have a contestant in the girls JV race.

Junior high racers completed a 2.75k race. Casey Parks was the top Laker boy in 20th place (18:41.4). Luisa Walz (18:11.3) and Maren Hoban (18:18.1) finished back-to-back in 15th and 16th for the DL girls.

The Lakers are back in action Monday, Jan. 16 in a preview of the section race at Little Falls.
