Laker boys Mid-State track champions

The Detroit Lakes boys track and field team defended their Mid-State Conference championship by less than two points over Pequot Lakes, while the Patriot girls team knocked off the defending DL girls Tuesday at Staples.

The Lakers had four individual conference champions.

Senior Quinn Bakken won the 200m dash in a time of 23.95.

Senior Aaron Johnson continued to find success in distance winning the 1,600m run in 4:47.87 with junior teammate Van Fritch-Gallatin in second place (4:59.83).

Detroit Lakes dominated throws taking the top three positions in both shot put and discus.

Junior Ben Nordmark won the shot put as the only thrower to surpass 50-feet at 50-1. Junior Jay Nielsen placed second (47-4.5), followed by senior Carson Tunheim (43-11.5).

Nielsen has been the discus team leader all season and won again with a throw of 150-9. Tunheim was the runner-up with a throw of 126-5, narrowly edging out junior teammate Jacob Kerzman (126-4).

The Patriots and Lakers split the four relays with Pequot Lakes taking first in the 4x200 and 4x400. DL picked up wins in the 4x100 (45.42) and 4x800 (8:31.00).

Senior Zack Buboltz was the 800m runner-up (2:08.72). Sophomore Tanner Olson placed second in the 3,200m (10:26.70).

Ben Heimark had a pair of third place marks in long jump (18-10.75) and triple jump (39-1).

DL scored 128.3 team points to 127 from the Patriots to claim the conference title.

The Pequot Lakes girls recorded a team score of 143.5, while the Lakers totaled 119.5 for runner-up.

The DL girls captured five conference titles. Sophomore Karrigan Hallisey cleared 16-feet to win the long jump. Sophomore Breanna Price won the discus with a throw of 123-3. The 4x100m relay team won in a time of 52.75. Sophomore Teeya Doppler battled sophomore teammate Emily Larson to win the 100m dash in 13.19 to Larson’s 13.21.

Larson got a Mid-State title of her own winning the 200m dash in 28.01.

Senior Mackenzie Ostlie had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 800m (2:32.69) and 1,600m (5:40.50).

Eighth-grader Katelyn McConky ran 13:34.68 to place second in the 3,200m.

In hurdles, sophomore Sydney Lundberg placed third in the 100m (17.61) and second in the 300m (52.09).

Junior Olivia Hanninen placed third in the 400m running a time of 63.38.

Brian Smith had the top mark in jumps placing second in the triple with a leap of 33-2.5 feet.

Boys team scores: 1 Detroit Lakes 128.3, 2 Pequot Lakes 127.0, 3 Staples-Motley 58.3, 4 Park Rapids Area 37.3, 5 Crosby-Ironton 23.0.

Girls team scores: 1 Pequot Lakes 143.5, 2 Detroit Lakes 119.5, 3 Park Rapids Area 62.0, 4 Staples-Motley 25.0, 5 Crosby-Ironton 24.0.
