Hard to get closer set scores than what propelled the Laker volleyball team to a 3-1 Section 8AA road victory over the Nuggets in Hawley Tuesday night.

Detroit Lakes won the opening set 25-23 and sets three and four by the same score.

Hawley’s lone victory was in the second 25-22.

The Lakers avenged an earlier 2-1 loss in the championship game of the Nuggets’ tournament in mid-September.

“It was fun to beat them tonight,” head coach Sara Schnathorst said. “We had good block numbers put up by our front row. We had to come from behind in a couple of the games and were able to do that to get wins.”

Six Lakers recorded blocks led by Teeya Doppler and Jocelyn Patnaude with three each. Breanna Price had a pair and Laura Prussia, Haidyn Gunderson and Rachael Perkins all had one.

Gunderson had big night offensively with 17 kills and seven digs. Doppler added nine kills and nine digs as the two outside hitters got it going against the Nuggets.

Perkins added five kills; Price put down three.

Autumn Kulik had a team-high 22 digs and Maren Daggett and Courtnee Ziegler reached double figures in assists with 19 and 12, respectively. Ziegler also had nine digs.

The Lakers have a tournament in Brainerd Saturday, Oct. 14 and the regular season finale at home versus Frazee Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
