With a good offseason of work in for the Detroit Lakes boys’ tennis team, the Lakers look to be on the upswing for the 2013 season.

The Lakers will be led into the 2013 campaign by the brothers Isaac and Alex Fondrick, who will fill in either the top two singles slots or the top doubles spot.

First-year head coach Patrick Starbeck, who was an assistant under Wade Johnson last year, said the team has a good shot at improving from last year after seeing many of the players training last summer.

The depth and number on the team will also be a factor in progression, as well.

“No spots are guaranteed,” Starbeck said. “There will be good competition in practice.”

Sophomore Alex Fondrick had a solid season in 2012 and will be DL’s top singles player, while senior Isaac Fondrick will fill the second singles spot.

If the Fondrick brothers go doubles, they will play as the No. 1 doubles team.

There is also a good contingent back with varsity experience in Austin Nelson, sophomore Caleb Howard, juniors Luke Eggebraaten and Colton Friesen, senior Ian Fritz and junior foreign exchange student Carlos Espinosa.

Practice, thus far, has been held inside due to the late winter still hanging around. But the Lakers are making do until they can head to the great outdoors.

“We’ve been having morning practices in the community center and doing what we can,” Starbeck said. “Our goal for the season is to finish in the top three in the section and a top two finish in the Mid-State Conference. But we just want to keep our guys playing well and keep our numbers out.”

The Lakers have their scheduled season opener Thursday, April 11, against section favorite Thief River Falls at home, starting at 4:30 p.m. They will then host Perham/Wadena-Deer Creek Friday, April 12, starting at 4:30 p.m.
