Gebhart stifles Spuds as DL picks up big victory

Tyler Gebhart was crafty when he needed to be Tuesday night at Matson Field.

The Detroit Lakes senior right-hander, with a sidearm delivery, pitched seven solid innings.

His complete-game effort helped lift the Lakers to an 8-5 victory against the Moorhead Spuds in nonconference Minnesota high school baseball.

“He’s not a big strikeout guy, but he’s always around the plate when he pitches,” Detroit Lakes coach Steve Fuhs said of Gebhart. “We have to catch the ball when he pitches and we did that for the most part.”

Gebhart scattered 11 hits, holding the Spuds scoreless in their final three at-bats.

Moorhead (8-5) has lost four of its past five games. The Spuds committed five errors against Detroit Lakes.

“When you put up five errors, it’s tough to beat a team. It doesn’t matter who you are playing,” Spuds coach Greg Salvevold said. “We just have to play at an elevated level. … We’re not showing that we’re playing at that elevated level.”

Detroit Lakes never trailed, seizing control with a three-run fourth inning. No. 9 hitter Brandon Dahring started the rally with a one-out double. Dahring later scored on a Taylor Magnuson single.

The Lakers took a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth after Nick Groth scored from third base on a fielder’s choice.

Five different Detroit Lakes players had RBIs, while seven different players scored runs.

“We’ve gotten a lot better at the bottom of the order,” Fuhs said. “If you are going to make any type of run, you are going to need a full lineup.”

The Spuds tried to rally in their final at-bat, putting runners on first and second base with one out after Gebhart had walked a batter and allowed a single.

The 6-foot-4 Gebhart quieted the rally, however, getting the next two Moorhead batters to tap into fielder’s choices.

“Moorhead is a good team. It’s exciting to come down here and beat them,” Gebhart said.

“He has a quirky wind-up and he has a lot movement on the ball,” Salvevold said of Gebhart. “He threw strikes.”

Fuhs was happy to see his Class 2A Lakers get a win against the Spuds, who are a Class 3A team. Detroit Lakes (10-2) has won six consecutive games.

“You are playing a team that is a level up and we haven’t played any of those so far this year so it’s a confidence builder,” Fuhs said.
