Fly Girls sweep Class A Dance championships

The Frazee Fly Girls captured their second Class A State Jazz Dance Championship Friday night at Target Center in Minneapolis.

The Fly Girls were awarded six rank points finishing two ahead of runners-up Lac Qui Parle Valley/Dawson Boyd (8) in a competition that came down to those two teams.

Zumbrota Mazeppa placed a distant third (19.5), followed by Yellow Medicine East (20.5), Aitkin (22) and Duluth Marshall (25).

Fraze exacted some revenge having finished second to the Aitkin All Starz in 2017. The Fly Girls last championship came in 2016,

Frazee advanced to the finals by finishing in the top half of the field of 12 teams in preliminaries.

High kick team earns Frazee sweep

Saturday, Frazee’s High Kick dance team matched Friday’s Jazz effort to sweep both state championships.

The Fly Girls’ performance of “Hamilton” took the title away from four-time defending champions Aitkin. The All-Starz placed third behind runners-up Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd.

Yellow Medicine East of Granite Falls placed fourth, Cannon Falls was fifth, and BOLD of Olivia placed sixth.

Isabella Matejka and Greta Nelson were named to the Class A Jazz All-Tournament Team, presented by Wells Fargo and the Minnesota State High School League. Each of the six finalist teams nominated two dancers for this honor. Cassidy Nelson and Juliana Diemert were named to the High Kick All-Tournament Team.
