Got the winter blues? Get out to a fishing derby

This month our community and the surrounding area will host many winter activities. We will have sled dog races, old time snowmobile runs, "Polar Plunge" and fishing derbies. We need to do this in our area because we have all had our fill of winter by middle of February. Especially when we have the kind of winter we have been having. I know I am sick of shoveling, snow blowing, and starting cars at 20 blow zero.

One event that will get you out for a great time, with plenty of food and fellowship, is the upcoming "Poles and Holes" fishing derby.  This event will be held next weekend (Feb. 12 to be exact) and is sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary. The Derby will be held on Little Detroit Lake. The Derby will start at noon and run until 3 p.m. The gates to get on the ice will open at 9 a.m. so you will have time to get an early jump on the fun. This will be a family friendly event so it is a great time to get the kids out for some ice fishing. The cost for the Derby is $35. Raffle tickets will also be available for $10. Three trailers of food vendors will be available. Nothing like enjoying a great brat while out fishing on the ice with friends.

The cold snap we just endured will be over and the long range forecast looks like 20 degree weather. If we get some sun to go with the mild temperatures it will be a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors again.

This is not a tournament. This is a derby. Tournaments are highly competitive. In tournaments you are on your own for drilling holes and finding fish. Tournaments are usually species specific and pay out to the top positions based on weight. Derbies are about having fun with a more playful competitive atmosphere. In a derby there are several ways to win a few bucks. Holes are provided in the area to be fished.

The derby is all about the community spirit of fun and fellowship. The proceeds from this event get recycled back to support other positive activities sponsored by the Breakfast Rotary. No glass bottles on our ice please. Let's keep the area lakes clean and respect the great natural resource of our lakes. This type of event is a great place to model to our younger generation the importance of good community citizenship.

If you are looking for something to do to take the edge off of winter, this "Poles and Holes" event is just the ticket.
