Raiders post big upset over New York Mills

Putting together a complete game has been one of the major obstacles for the Lake Park-Audubon baseball team during this season, but in the Raiders’ 6-5 victory over then No. 3 ranked New York Mills, everything came together.

Junior pitcher Mason Swegarden did something not many pitchers will ever say, in that he owned the Eagles’ batting order on that day with 14 strikeouts for the complete-game victory.

New York Mills did pick up seven hits, but all five of their runs were unearned.

“I was very happy with our team, we stayed mentally focused in the game and never gave up,” said LP-A head coach Taylor Fuhs. “New York Mills is an incredible team and I hope this win gives us momentum through the last week of the season and section playoffs.”

The Eagles (11-1) bolted off to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and expanded on it with two more in the third for the 5-0 advantage.

But the Raiders (5-6) answered with five runs in the fourth, keyed by a Wes Jaster single and a Dylan Larson double, which scored Swegarden and Lane Ulmer.

Tim Brekken reached on an error, which scored Jaster. A Korey Mickelson single brought in Larson and Brekken to tie the game 5-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, Swegarden reached on a one-out error, which was followed by a Jaster single. Brekken came up with the clutch hit to score Swegarden.

The Eagles advanced a runner to third base, but ran out of time as Swegarden forced a two-out grounder to end the game.

Jaster went 3-3 in the victory, while Brekken was 2-3.

The season has been an up and down affair, with consistency being the problem for the Raiders.

“We have played well at times, but we just need to become more consistent in all aspects of the game,” Fuhs said. “We have played well against some good teams, but haven’t found a way to get over the top. Against New York Mills, we played a complete game and excelled in all aspects.”
