Laker softball splits at Bemidji to start season
The Detroit Lakes softball team earned a split with the Lumberjacks in a Section 8AAA doubleheader to begin the season at Bemidji Saturday.
The Lakers won the nightcap 10-7 after a late-inning comeback. Bemidji took the opener 5-0.
The Jacks took a 5-0 lead in game two looking for the sweep.
Rachael Perkins tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mercedez Bellanger for DL’s first run of the season in the fifth inning, but Bemidji answered with an unearned run to keep the spread at five runs.
Taylor Prussia knocked in Laura Prussia with an RBI single to send the game to the seventh with the Lakers trailing 6-2.
DL’s offense kicked into high gear in the seventh on four consecutive hits: a triple by Rachael Perkins, RBI singles by Madilyn Kirchner and Mackenzie Braukmann and a two RBI double by Bellanger.
Jocelyn Patnaude knocked in a pair of runs on a one-out single past a drawn-in infield and Braukmann added a second RBI single in the inning to lead 10-6.
Bemidji threatened in the their last at-bats scoring a run and loading the bases with two out.
Kirchner came on in relief of Bellanger and preserved the win with a five-pitch strikeout for the save.
Bemidji pitcher Evette Morgan tossed a no-hitter in the opener in a 10-0 Bemidji victory.
Laura Prussia and Alexis Ostlie were the lone Lakers to reach base in the game. DL committed five errors in the field.
Kirchner took the loss striking out seven batters over four innings.
The Lakers (1-1) will host Pequot Lakes Tuesday, April 24 in the home opener at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Snappy Park. DL travel to last season’s section champions Thief River Falls on Thursday, April 26. The Prowlers have dropped to Class AA this season.
DL finishes the week with a quadrangular on Friday, April 27 playing Sartell-St. Stephen and Little Falls. Games begin at noon.
