Swimmers win at Morris, second at Last Chance Invite
The Detroit Lakes boys swimming and diving team picked up a dual victory 108-41 over Morris at the University of Minnesota-Morris Thursday and placed second to host Park Rapids at the Last Chance Invite Saturday.
The Lakers picked up victories in eight of the first 10 races at Morris before swimming exhibition in the breaststroke and 400-free relay with a sizeable lead on the scoreboard.
DL swept the top three finishes in the 200-medley to get off to a fast start and had the top two 200-freestyle relay finishes.
Gabe Kitzmann (2:08.52) won the 200-freestyle. Tucker Strawsell touched in 2:18.23 to win the individual medley and recorded a second win in the 100-free (53.96).
Christopher Just got Morris a win in the 50-free swimming 26.67. DL’s Josten Bellefeuille was the runner-up in 26.90.
Cole Metelak scored 204.35 to place first in diving.
Landon Lindsey won the 100-butterfly in 1:01.75.
Lance Parzyck (1:11.05), Jackson Zurn (1:12.84) and Tanner Olson (1:15.33) finished in order to sweep the backstroke.
The Lakers scored 555 points to distance themselves from Perham/NY Mills (393) for a second place finish behind the host Panthers (743) at Saturday's Last Chance Invite.
Strawsell broke a meet record in the 500-free winning with a new mark of 5:16.66. He added a 200-freestyle victory swimming a time of 1:56.87.
Lindsey had the top time in the 100-butterfly placing first in 1:00.32. Gabe Kitzmann won the 100-freestyle in 55.20.
DL’s top relay finish was first place in the 200-free. The team of Gabe Kitzmann, Parzyck, Strawsell and Olson won in 1:37.97
DL will return to Park Rapids Friday, Feb. 9 for the Mid-State Conference Championships. The Section 5A Championships will be held in Alexandria Feb. 23-24.
