Swimmers wrap season at section meet

The Detroit Lakes boys swimming team wrapped up the season at the Section 5A championships in Alexandria Saturday with all three relays placing, along with Tucker Strawsell in the individual finals.

Strawsell placed sixth in the 500-freestyle in a time of 5:13.30. Melrose-Sauk Centre’s Spencer Van Beck won the section title swimming 5:01.42.

Strawsell was on two of the three placing relay teams. He swam the third leg with Tanner Olson, Lance Parzyck and anchor Gabe Kitzmann on the fifth place 200-freestyle team (1:36.80).

The 200-medley team of John Gulon, Garrett Bakken, Landon Lindsey and Elijah Kitzmann placed sixth (1:50.61).

LANCE PARZYCK

The 400-freestyle relay team of Strawsell, Gabe Kitzmann, Parzyck and Olson finished in seventh place (3:33.03).

Three different Lakers won their consolation races.

Strawsell placed ninth in the 200-free (1:55.93). Lindsey was ninth in the 100-fly (58.27) and Gabe Kitzmann touched first in the 100-free to place ninth in a time of (52.76). Olson was right behind him in 10th place swimming 53.26.

Both swimmers also placed in the 50-free consolation race. Kitzmann was 13th (24.10), Olson 16th (24.42).

In the backstroke consolation, John Gulon swam 1:02.09, good for 12th place.

Bakken (1:10.59) and Parzyck (1:12.97) finished in 14th and 16th place, respectively, in the 100-breaststroke.

Cole Metelak led the DL divers with 208.35 points in eighth place. Edward Johnson (198.00) placed 12th, followed by Zane Weaver in 16th place (167.05).

In Friday’s preliminaries, Strawsell recorded the Lakers’ top finish placing fourth in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:11.40.

The 200 medley team of John Gulon, Garrett Bakken, Landon Lindsey and  Elijah Kitzmann placed sixth to qualify in a time of 1:51.57.

The 200-free relay team also placed sixth. Gabe Kitzmann, Lance Parzyck, Strawsell and Tanner Olson finished in a time of 1:37.62.

DL’s 400-free relay of Gabe Kitzmann, Parzyck, Olson and Strawasell placed seventh to qualify in the final race of the meet in a time of 3:33.93.

The top eight finishers vie for section titles Saturday. Swimmers finishing in ninth through 16th place advance to the B finals.

Sartell-St. Stephen scored 486.5 points to capture the team title. Alexandria was second with 398. Detroit Lakes placed seventh scoring 154.
