Familiar names lead DL swimmers in opener

Syd Gulon, Jennifer Tracy and Lucy Steinke swept the top three finishes taking gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, as the individuals scoring the most points at Monday’s Laker Pentathlon swimming meet at the BTD Aquatics Center.

Tracy and Gulon swept first place in all five events.

Gulon won the 100-yard individual medley, 50-freestyle and 50-breaststroke worth 24 points each.

Tracy opened the meet with wins in the 50-fly and 50-back with Gulon the runner-up in each event.

Steinke broke up a sweep of the top two spots by Tracy and Gulon with a second place finish in the 50-free.

The trio led Detroit Lakes to a wide margin of victory scoring 545.5 team points. Fergus Falls placed second in the field of seven teams with 209.5.

Gulon scored an impressive 114 out of a possible 120 points; Tracy posted 107 and Steinke 86 with five finishes in the top 10.

The Lakers had 10 swimmers post top 10 finishes with Evan Westrum, Kaitlyn Peterson, Chelsy Johnson, Josie Retz, Madison Gerdes, Faith Hamm and Alexis Gerdes joining the lead three.

Detroit Lakes will host the first dual of the season against Thief River Falls Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m., before three consecutive road meets in Crookston, Park Rapids and Fergus Falls.
