Laker swimmers qualify for section finals in every event

Detroit Lakes will be represented in the finals of each event at the Section 8A swimming and diving championships after the completion of the preliminary rounds Friday, Nov. 9 in Warroad.

The Lakers grabbed the top seed in four events: Kaitlyn Peterson in the 200-freestyle; Jennifer Tracy in the 200-individual medley and 100-butterfly and Syd Gulon in the 500-freestyle.

There are three Laker individuals in the finals of three events. Evan Westrum was the runner-up to Tracy in the fly and Lexi Gerdes placed six.

DL swept the top three breaststroke finishes and nearly had half of the top eight qualifying field.

Gulon, Madi Gerdes and Ellie Staley finished 1-2-3; Chelsy Johnson was ninth.

The top eight advance to the Saturdays’ A finals, while swimmers finishing in ninth through 16th place advance to the B finals.

Peterson placed third in the 500 behind Gulon and Faith Hamm will join the duo in the finals after finishing in sixth place. Hamm will also join Peterson in the 200-free finals after finishing sixth.

Josie Retz heads to the backstroke finals with a third place prelim finish.
