The Bemidji boys tennis team has only one blemish on the season and improved to 11-1 overall after a 5-2 road victory over Detroit Lakes Tuesday, May 1.

“It is always a tough day when your playing a good team in the class above you,” head coach Zach Biggar said. “We wanted to try some different things and see some other players play doubles and against some good competition. I was proud how the guys still fought even though some were put into really tough matches.:”

DL picked up both match victories in the top two doubles matches.

PEDRO LACASA

Gabe Hanninen and Pedro Lacasa defeated Luke Hess and Silas Hess 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. In two-dubs, Trey Seebold and Tanner Doppler followed suit after dropping the first set 7-5 to win the second 7-5 and cap the win with a 10-8 pro set victory in the third.

For Bemidji, Nic Buffo led the way at first singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win, and Spencer Konecne followed at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“It was nice to see Spencer make short work of a match that had gone into a third-set tiebreaker early in the season,” Bemidji head coach Mark Fodness said.

Wyatt Harrom and Bailey Harris rounded out the Lumberjacks’ singles sweep -- Harrom winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 3 and Harris winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.

Ben Hess and Kolden Michalicek added a tally to the BHS win column serving up a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles over DL’s Jake Hanson and Isaac Eggebraaten to help the Jacks to the 5-2 victory.

The Lakers did improve one match from a 6-1 loss to the Jacks earlier in the season.

DL continues a schedule against Class AA teams with the Moorhead Spuds in town Friday, May 4 at 4:30 p.m.
