Detroit Lakes picked up two victories to improve to 7-2 in duals this season after a 6-1 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek and a 5-2 win over last year’s state qualifiers Crookston 5-2 at home Friday afternoon on Sept. 7.

“Crookston was a big win for us,” DL head coach Tanner Beauchman said. “We haven't been able to beat Crookston since I became coach six season ago.”

While the Pirates lost some players from that Class A state team, they remain a formidable team.

“It was a dramatic win,” said Beauchman.

Lauryn Manning and Mercedez Bellanger put the first win on the board at two-doubles 7-5-6-0.

“They have been playing well and winning a lot of matches despite playing higher in our lineup due to injuries,” said Beauchman.

Emily Skjonsberg (3-singles) defeated Hannah Street 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 and Josey Allen (4-singles) put the Lakers third point up with a straight set win over Halle Winjum four and three.

Both players were undefeated in two matches on the day.

“Both Josey and Emily prefer to play doubles but they have been very successful playing singles this season,” said Beauchman. “I like that our squad is versatile this year. I can change up our lineup and feel confident with who plays singles and doubles. We needed to find one more win and it came down to the wire.”

The Lakers led 3-2 but had lost the first sets in the two remaining matches at 1-singles and 3-doubles.

Siri Vagle and Chloe Will fell behind 1-4 in the second set already down a set but battled back to force a third set tiebreaker. The Laker duo jumped out to 9-3 lead, but lost six straight points.  At 9-9 they strung together two points to end the match and give DL the win 5-7, 7-6, 11-9.

In the top singles match, Brina Smith did not know the match had been clinched and was in another battle with Hayden Winjum.

Smith fell behind late in the tiebreak, but fought off match points to earn a 12-10 tiebreaker win.

“Brina showed a lot of grit today by fighting off match points in both rounds,” said Beauchman.

DL had an advantage in doubles matchups against Wadena-Deer Creek and swept all three matches in straight sets getting victories from: Makenna Duncan and Mary Nelmark at love; Manning and Bellanger 6-0, 7-5 and Will and Vagle 6-1, 6-0.

DL took three of the four singles matches.

Smith avenged an earlier loss this year to Grace Hinojos 3-6, 6-4, 13-11 fighting off three match points in the tiebreaker.

Shelby Busker played strong but was defeated by Madison Packer at 2-singles 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

“Shelby played a great match in a three set loss,” Beauchman said. “Packer is one of the stronger 2-singles players. Shelby played aggressively. She was moving the ball around and hitting some sharp angles. It was one of the best matches I have seen Shelby play this season.”

Skjonsberg and Allen both won their matches one and one.

The Lakers head to Bemidji Tuesday, Sept. 11 for a quadrangular with the host Lumberjacks, Staples-Motley and East Grand Forks.
