Three Lakers, UCB's Wamre, advance to state quarterfinals
Detroit Lakes wrestlers Brody Ullyott, Isaiah Thompson, Braydon Ortloff and United Clay Becker’s Sam Wamre advanced to the Class AA state wrestling quarterfinals after the early session Friday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Ortloff, the No. 2-seeded senior at 160 pounds, dominated his match against Zach Stahl of Marshall advancing in a 16-6 major decision. Ortloff led 6-2 after one period and 8-3 after the second.
Thompson, a sophomore, was equally effective in taking out Hibbing’s Cole Verichak by way of a major 12-2 decision. Thompson scored five points in the early stages and held that lead for two minutes. He led 7-1 after the second period.
At 113 pounds, Ullyott had to merely show up to move to the quarters. His fellow freshman opponent Ramon Cortez of South St. Paul forfeited the match.
UCB senior Wamre controlled his match with Milaca’s Craig Santema and ended it with a third period fall at 4:52.
Three Lakers suffered first round defeats.
The No. 2-seed at 152 pounds Austin Baker was defeated by Annandale/Maple Lake’s Walker Weege 9-4 in overtime. Baker held leads of 2-0 and 4-3 after the first four minutes, but Weege tied the match in the third and scored a takedown and a near fall in OT to advance.
Fabyon Greer (138) dropped a 3-0 decision to Tanner Kroells of Delano. Kroells kept Greer in check and negated his speed.
Robby Hotsman of Kasson-Mantorville scored eight points in the first period and held a sizeable lead over DL’s Blake Weber in a 120-pound match. Weber was defeated 17-7.
The latter three Lakers will have to await quarterfinals results to see if they remain alive in wrestlebacks.
