Tappe leads four Hornet state placers

Frazee’s senior heavyweight Tanner Tappe advanced to the state Class A championship match finishing as the runner-up to lead four state wrestling placers from the Hornets Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Tappe matched up with Craig Orlando of Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-Parkers Prairie in the 285-pound final. Orlando captured the state title in a 12-2 major decision.

Tappe pinned his way to the semifinals taking down Ben Tentis of Wabasha-Kellogg early in the second period at 2:22 of the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Tappe won by fall at 4:43 over Alex Chidester of Ogilvie.

Tappe faced top-seeded Josh Hansen of Canby in the semis and advanced to the title match with a 9-4 decision.

TANNER SCHERMERHORN

Tanner Schermerhorn and Luke Tweeton each placed fourth in their respective weight classes. Michael Miller was the fourth Hornet to place taking fifth.

Schermerhorn advanced to the 126-pound semifinals after a 17-2 technical fall (4:54) over Alec Johnson of Kenyon-Wanamingo and and 7-2 quarterfinal decision over Mason Gode of Long Prairie/Grey Eagle-Browerville.

Eventual state champion Michael Suda of Pipestone Area narrowly escaped Schermerhorn in the semifinals winning 12-10 in overtime.

Schermerhorn defeated Jamaal Baird of Deer River 4-3 in wrestlebacks to advance to the third place match. Dereck Ellingson of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut-Grove defeated Schermerhorn (45-6) in a 3-1 decision to claim third place.

Tweeton also battled for third place falling in an ultimate tie breaker 6-5 to Kyle Schmidt of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley-Nevis to finish his sophomore season at 39-10.

Tweeton won his opening match in a 2-1 decision over Bryce Schmidt of Quad County, but was forced to wrestlebacks after an 8-2 loss to eventual state champion Will Storch of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.

Tweeton picked up three straight victories in wrestlebacks to reach the third place match. He defeated Tyler Timm of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove by fall at 3:46. Next up was a 2-1 decision over Jarret Haglund of Zumbrota-Mazeppa and a 3-1 overtime win over Dominik Vacura of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River

Miller took a similar path to Tweeton pushing through wrestlebacks after an 8-2 opening round victory over Logan Taylor of Adrian.

Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena’s Trevor Janssen needed overtime (11-6) to dispatch of Miller in the quarterfinals.

Miller won back-to-back matches with a second period pin (3:45) over Trevor Pearson of Maple River and an 11-2 major decision over Deer River’s Marshall Michienzi.

Windom/Mountain Lake’s Brett Willaby defeated Miller 11-2 to send Miller to the fifth place match. Miller captured fifth place handily defeating Blaine Fischer of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa by technical fall (17-2) early in the third period.
