Local church creates 'blessing bags' for Becker County Sheriff deputies

Mahnomen native Denise Kettner became the new president of the United Way of Becker County on June 1. She biecame involved with the organization during her 36-year career teaching kindergarten for the  Detroit Lakes School District, but decided to deepen her commitment to the organization after retiring from teaching  in 2014. The theme she chose for the United Way's 2016 fundraising drive is "Change the Story."

Detroit Lakes resident Steve Schmit works through some rehabilitation exercises with certified occupational therapy assistant Jolene Bruhn in the therapy pool at Ecumen-Detroit Lakes' Emmanuel Nursing Home. Schmit was a patient in the nursing home's transitional care unit for a month and a half this summer while recovering from injuries sustained in a life-threatning ski accident in March. He returned home on July 6.
