Minnesota native Vernell Roberts started work as the new general manager of Detroit Lakes' Public Utilities Department last month, supervising the electric, water, wastewater and LakesNet internet service systems. He has over 34 years of experience in the utilities business.He and his wife Sharon have one grown daughter who lives in Colorado with her husband and son -- their first grandchild.

Becker County Coalition of Lake Associations (COLA) officers (from left) Terry Kalil, vice president; Dick Hecock, president; and Barb Halbakken Fischburg, treasurer, were honored that their organization was chosen by the Becker Soil and Water Conservation District as its Conservationists of the Year. They will be honored during the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts conference in the Twin Cities later this year.

Peggy Stellmach is a Detroit Lakes native who moved to Lake Park six years ago with her husband, Ed.has established a Garden Quilt Show and Tea in memory of her late sister, Mary Disse Ballard. The show is set for this Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Jay and Anna Brown, along with youngest son David were honored at the Becker County Fair this past Saturday as the University of Minnesota's 2012 Farm Family of the Year for Becker County. The Browns have seven older children who no longer live on the farm in rural Lake Park, but come back to help with the operation as often as they can. The Browns also have six grandchildren.

Detroit Lakes native Kari Williams was appointed June 1 as the new president of the United Way of Becker County for 2012-13. She and her husband Mike both grew up in Detroit Lakes, then moved away for a few years before coming back to the community 19 years ago to raise their children.
