Former Friends of Tamarac President Ron Jenson says that receiving the Silver Eagle Award from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service last summer was “one of two major events in my life.” He stepped down from the Tamarac board after nine years, but will continue to be a presence at the Refuge, as he has taken on the job of managing its gift shop. The Friends of Tamarac Board of Directors was the driving force behind the creation of Tamarac’s new Discovery Center, which opened to the public for the first time last June. The Friends of Tamarac were recently honored by the National Wildlife Refuge Association as the 2016 Molly Krival Friends Group of the Year.  The award was presented Feb. 17. SUBMITTED PHOTO

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the grand opening of the new Discovery Center Saturday at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.
