Polar Fest

January 17, 2018
Crews of professionals and volunteers worked diligently side-by-side throughout the day last Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13, to complete the fist ice harvest that Detroit Lake had seen in almost 50 years. In all, a little over 1,100 blocks — each weighing about 900 pounds each — were harvested for construction of 'King Isbit's Ice Palace,' which starts today. (Vicki Gerdes / Tribune)

This is the concept design for the Detroit Lakes Ice Palace that was created by local artist Hans Gilsdorf, who says the estimated 24x60x30 foot structure will take approximately 1,600 blocks of ice to create. That means about a half acre of ice will need to be harvested from Little Detroit Lake for the structure, which will be built on the city beach near the Pavilion.
