There was a common occurrence in the Detroit Lakes Legion Post 15 baseball team’s two wins in the Wood Bat Tournament in Perham this past weekend, and that was solid defense. The lack of errors was the key to success for DL’s two wins over Ottertail Central and Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal, while too many miscues led to their lone loss to Fergus Falls. “We had some big errors against Fergus Falls and that was the difference between our win over OTC,” said DL head coach Mitch McLeod. “Our young kids just need to learn how to compete.
Discipline will be a key ingredient under new Detroit Lakes boys’ head hockey coach Todd Dwyer, who installed that certain virtue during his six years as head coach at Breckenridge/Wahpeton. Dwyer takes over head coaching duties from Chris Denardo, who had a successful run as Laker head coach, but decided to resign to focus more on spending time with his family and kids. With the reins now officially handed over to Dwyer, the former Blades head coach is ready to dive in and start making his imprint on the Laker program. “I am very excited coming to Detroit Lakes, they have a good trad

The Detroit Lakes Post 15 Legion team is off to a sluggish start with four straight losses to begin the season. Growing pains were expected, with six starters on the Legion team playing junior varsity during the spring season. “There are a lot of young mistakes being made,” said Legion head coach Mitch McLeod. “One of the big problems, thus far, is our pitchers are not throwing strikes.
The fairy tale in which was the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf season, came to a conclusion Wednesday with the Lakers clinching their third-straight Class 2A state championship at the Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan. Four seniors played their last round as Lakers and they made it count, as DL shot a second-day score of 297, which went with their one-day state meet record 293 Tuesday for an all-time low two-day state meet score of 590. It was 20 strokes better than Minnewaska’s 610, which was set in 2009. “No one could have written a better script than this,” said DL head coach C
