Former Menahga resident Arlene (Mrs. Luther) Kimball, 89, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, November 27, 2009 at her home. Funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls. Olson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls is in charge of arrangements.
July 22, 1912-Nov. 25, 2009 Veronica K. "Vera" Myrom, 97, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday November 25, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Veronica Katherine Heckenkamp was born to Antone and Phloma (Schneider) Heckenkamp on July 22, 1912 in Quincy, Ill. Vera quit school in the eighth grade to help out her family. She went to work selling hats. Vera became manager of the hat store in Quincy, Ill., and later was given a promotion to move to Chicago and manage a hat shop there.
Jan. 31, 1947-Nov. 24, 2009 Thomas K. Schmitz, 62, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009, surrounded by his family, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Tom was born the son of Kenneth and Rosemary (Eischens) Schmitz on January 31, 1947 in Park Rapids, where he grew up and attended school. While in school, he participated in football and track. Tom married his "high school sweetheart," Jane Edam, on August 28, 1965 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Park Rapids. In September 1965 they moved to Detroit Lakes, where Tom worked for Northwestern Bell as a lineman.
Feb. 19, 1968-Nov. 22, 2009 Jeffrey J. Kohler, 41, of Audubon, died on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Jeff was born the son of John and Sharon (Brick) Kohler on February 19, 1968 in Martinez, Calif. As a young child, he moved to Audubon with his family. Jeff was raised and educated in Audubon, graduating from high school in 1986. He worked various jobs in the area throughout his life. Jeff was diagnosed with ALS on Nov. 21, 2002. He made the best of each day, despite all of the challenges he faced.
Jan. 17, 1930-Nov. 22, 2009 Donald W. McGillis, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at home with his family by his side. Donald William McGillis was born the son of Harry and Myrtle (Frovarp) McGillis on January 17, 1930 in Edmore, N.D. He was raised and educated in Edmore, graduating from Edmore High School in 1948. Don was united in marriage to Joan Ramberg on January 27, 1950 in Devils Lake, N.D. He then attended Mayville State Teachers College in Mayville, N.D., where he did his undergraduate work in English, Library Science and Accounting.
July 21, 1930-Nov. 22, 2009 Valare L .Hammer, 79, of rural Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Valare was born to Franz and Agnes (Winter) Sivertson on July 21, 1930 in Detroit Lakes. She attended country school at District 81 in Shell Lake Township and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. Valare attended Normal Training in Park Rapids, and then attended Bemidji State University, receiving a teaching degree.
April 13, 1915-Nov. 16, 2009 Eleanor Lucas, 94, of Willmar, Minn., died Monday, November 16, 2009 at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. Eleanor was born the daughter of Paul and Rebekah (Hamley) Harris on April 13, 1915 in Thief River Falls, Minn. She graduated from Thief River High School. She graduated from Concordia College in 1937. She taught in Parkers Prairie, Detroit Lakes and Audubon. On December 18, 1937, she married Gordon Lucas.
Nov. 19, 1918-Nov. 21, 2009 Lillian H. Kjono, 91, of Mahnomen, died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Twin Valley Living Center in Twin Valley, Minn. Lillian Harriet Bredeson, the daughter of Alfred and Emma (Karlstad) Bredeson, was born November 19, 1918 in Otter Tail County. She grew up and graduated from high school in Fergus Falls. As a young woman she worked for several years at Scotts Store in Fergus Falls. On November 2, 1947 Lillian was united in marriage to Roy Kjono and the couple continued to live in Fergus Falls for a time.
Nov. 16, 1951-Nov. 20, 2009 Diane M. Knopf, 58, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Visitation was held at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on Monday, Nov. 23, and prior to services Tuesday at the church. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Reverend Dan C. Abrahams officiating. Interment was in Western Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fergus Falls. Diane Marie Miller was born to Clarence and Frieda (Hench) Miller on Nov. 16, 1951 in Fergus Falls.
Former Ogema resident Ronald M. Andersen, 68, of Glyndon, Minn., died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at MeritCare Medical Center in Fargo. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Korsmo Funeral Chapel in Moorhead. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Glyndon Lutheran Church, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon. Arrangements were entrusted to Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead.
