July 5, 1939-Sept. 25, 2009 Maurice M. "Maurie" Strom, 70, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Maurice Strom was born to Maurice and Edna Alvstad Strom on July 5, 1939 in Ashby, Minn. Over the years the family lived in several towns in western Minnesota and North Dakota, including Braddock, N.D., and Tintah, Minn. Maurie graduated from Tintah High School in 1957. He then attended Valley City State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in education. He taught school for four years at Washington Elementary School in Detroit Lakes.
March 10, 1921-Sept. 27, 2009 Robert Thorwaldsen, 88, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Lincoln Park Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes. Robert was born to Alf and Jenny Thorwaldsen on March 10, 1921 in Duluth, Minn., where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Denfeld High School in 1940. He entered the United States Army in 1942 and completed his basic training at Fort Warren, Wyo. He was then assigned to the 6th Ordinance Company, stationed in Berkeley, Calif. On Feb. 22, 1943 Robert married Charlotte VanDuyn in Duluth.
Sheyenne Keezer, unborn child of Rock Keezer Jr. and Sheyenne Norcross of Ponsford, died Friday, September 25, 2009 from injuries received in an automobile accident near White Earth. She is survived by her father, Rock E. Keezer Jr. of Ponsford; a brother, Aaron Norcross of Ponsford; grandparents, Joycelyn Norcross and Richard Basswood Jr., both of Ponsford, and Jana Keezer and Rock Keezer Jr., both of Naytahwaush; great grandparents, Mavis Bush of Naytahwaush, Joseph Bush of Mahnomen and Mary Jo Basswood of Ponsford; as well as many aunts and uncles. Friends may call from 5 p.m.
Dec. 27, 1980-Sept. 25, 2009 Cheyenne L. Norcross, 28, of Ponsford, died Friday, September 25, 2009 from injuries received in an automobile accident near White Earth. Cheyenne Lovely Norcross was born to Richard Basswood Jr. and Joycelyn Norcross on Dec. 27, 1980 in Detroit Lakes. She was raised and educated in Ponsford, graduating from the Circle of Life School in White Earth, in 2000.
May 20, 1916-Sept. 27, 2009 Lt. Colonel Charles J. Askegaard, 93, of Detroit Lakes, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. He had been a resident of Detroit Lakes for over 48 years. Charles John Askegaard was born to Dan and Emma (Campdin) Askegaard on May 20, 1916 in Minot, N.D. He grew up in Fargo, and obtained a chemistry degree at North Dakota State University. He was in ROTC and when the United States was drawn into World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
July 18, 1962-Sept. 28, 2009 Lake Park native Thomas M. "Tom" Mahlum, 47, of Fargo, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009 at his home. Thomas Michael Mahlum was born the son of Virgil and Patricia (Monson) Mahlum on July 18, 1962 in Detroit Lakes. He attended Lake Park High School. After high school, Tom served in the United States Air Force. Tom worked for Butler Machinery, RDO and Concord Environmental Equipment. Tom was a member of Cormorant Lutheran Church in rural Lake Park. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as tinkering on his computer.
March 30, 1962-Sept. 24, 2009 David C. Lekang, 47, of Lake Park, died Thursday Sept. 24, 2009, at Merit Care Palliative Care in Fargo. David C. Lekang was born to Jack and Dorothy Lee Lekang on March 30, 1962 in National City, Calif. Because his father was in the military the family lived in various places including Norfolk, Va., New Orleans, La., and Newfoundland. They later moved to West Fargo, where David graduated from high school in 1980. He moved to Williston, N.D., where he worked in construction and at a convenience store. In 1982 David married Angela Braaten in West Fargo.
May 31, 1929-Sept. 27, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Vernie M. Taylor, 80, of Milaca, Minn., died on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Elim Home in Milaca. Vernie May Beto was born to Frank and Lontina (Nelson) Beto on May 31, 1929 in Cushing, Minn. She started her education in a country school near Cushing, and later attended school in Little Falls, where she graduated from high school. Vernie married Willard "Bill" Taylor on Sept. 3, 1947 in Little Falls. The couple resided in Little Falls, Waubun and Detroit Lakes during their marriage.
Nov. 3, 1920-Sept. 25, 2009 Dorothy A. Diederichs, 88, of Vergas, died Friday, September 25, 2009, at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham. Dorothy Alice Regan was born to Harold and Lucille (McNally) Regan on Nov. 3, 1920 in Chicago, Ill. She married John William Diederichs. Surviving Dorothy are her daughter, Nancy Dudgeon; six grandchildren; great grandchildren; sister, Mary Lou Blackwell; and nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, John Diederichs; and son, John Diederichs Jr. A graveside service was held Saturday, Sept.
Eric Spencer Korby, 36, Perham, died on Sept. 20, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, due to injuries from a motorcycle accident. Eric Spencer Korby was born on Jan. 9, 1973, in Perham to Camilla "Kaye" (Magar) Korby and the late Carl Korby. Eric grew up in rural New York Mills. He was baptized in the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills and con-firmed in the Stateline Apostolic Lutheran Church. Eric attended New York Mills High School and graduated with the Class of 1991.
