March 31, 1916-July 31, 2009 Former Park Rapids and Becker resident Arzella P. Schaapveld, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Emmanuel Community in Detroit Lakes. Arzella was born to Louis and Honor (Cox) Stumvoll on March 31, 1916 in Becker, Minn. She married Lloyd B. Schaapveld on June 19, 1936 in Beardsley, Minn. Arzella obtained her B.S. degree in education from St. Cloud State University and taught for over 31 years. She taught in Clinton, Duluth, Morrison County, Sherburne County, Becker and 15 years in Monticello.
March 7, 1933-July 28, 2009 Ernest B. Iverson, 76, of Winger, Minn., died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at his home as a result of farming accident. Ernest Bernard Iverson was born the son of Lars and Bertha (Baglien) Iverson on March 7, 1933 in Garden Township, Minn. He was raised on the family farm and attended school near there. On April 23, 1966 Ernie married Barbara Aanenson at Faaberg Lutheran Church in Rindal, Minn. Barb and Ernie made their home on the family farm before purchasing their own farm a half-mile away in 1970.
Jan. 29, 1933-July 30, 2009 Former Ponsford and Minneapolis resident Ernest B. Bonga, 76, of Frazee, died Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. Ernest was born to John George and Francis (Wadena) Bonga on Jan. 29, 1933 in Ponsford, where he was raised and educated before moving to Minneapolis. For 18 years he worked at Sears, selling and installing fencing for customers. In 1980, Ernie married Andrea Wagar at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
Sept. 7, 1943-July 30, 2009 Barbara J. Zapp, 65, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, July 30, 2009 at her home in Detroit Lakes. Barbara Joan Blacknik was born to Clayton and Violet (Mercer) Blacknik on Sept. 7, 1943 in Detroit Lakes. She was a 1961 graduate of Monroe (Wisconsin) High School. Barbara married Edward Zapp in 1965 in Detroit Lakes. During her working life, she was the business manager for Lake Region Clinic in Detroit Lakes and, after the merger of Lake Region Clinic and the Detroit Lakes Clinic, was the assistant business manager for the new Dakota Clinic for 10 years.
July 31, 1948-July 30, 2009 Thomas J. Smith, 60, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, in his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Tom was born to Robert and Madge (Nickeson) Smith on July 31, 1948 in Grand Forks, N.D., where he grew up and attended school, graduating in 1966 from Grand Forks Central High School. In 1970, Tom graduated from Jamestown Community College. He married Vicki Egstad on March 10, 1974, in Grand Forks; together they had six children. Tom was employed by West Central Incorporated.
Oct. 12, 1976-July 26, 2009 Hawley native Ryan D. Leister, 32, of Fargo, died Sunday, July 26, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Ryan Daniel Leister was born to Daniel and Diane (Hagen) Leister on Oct. 12, 1976 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up and attended school in Hawley, graduating from high school there in 1995. Following high school, Ryan attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, graduating in 2001, before getting his master's degree from South Dakota State University in Brookings in 2003.
June 14, 1941-July 28, 2009 Michael A. "Mickey" Bergstrom, 68, of Rochert, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Michael A. Bergstrom was born to Gust and Mary (Ryan) Bergstrom on June 14, 1941 in Fargo. He grew up in rural Rochert and attended school in Frazee. He worked at the Swift Turkey Plant in Detroit Lakes for several years. He also farmed and cut wood. Mickey enjoyed playing the accordion and the harmonica. He also liked to garden.
Feb. 23, 1919-July 27, 2009 Robert D. Weissenstein, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday July 27, 2009 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Robert D. Weissenstein was born to Robert and Rose Weissenstein on Feb. 23, 1919 in Lansing, Mich. He grew up and attended school in the Detroit area. He then served in the United States Army from 1941-45. On Aug. 7, 1948 he married Celia Kubinski in Detroit, Mich. They made their home in the Detroit area. Robert worked as a salesman for American Bakeries for 33 years. He and Celia moved to Detroit Lakes in 2004.
Oct. 2, 1940-July 26, 2009 Gary Herrick, 68, of Fergus Falls died Sunday, July 26, 2009 at his residence, under the care of his family and Lakeland Hospice. Gary, the third child of Donald and Pauline Herrick, was born Oct. 2, 1940, in Grand Forks, N.D. His father worked for Northern Pacific Railroad, so the family moved several times before Don was given the position of station agent in Detroit Lakes, where Gary grew up. Gary graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1959, and attended Moorhead State Teachers College for one semester before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1960.
Oct. 26, 1920-July 15, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Dayton Johnson, 88, of Battle Lake, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 15th, 2009, surrounded by his family. Dayton was born Oct. 26, 1920. He grew up on a farm in Buffalo, N.D. He served during World War II with the Army Air Force, as a ball turret gunner flying in B17s. After the war he returned to Buffalo and began farming. He married a young schoolteacher, Edna (Robin) Kjelland, in 1950. At various times during Dayton's farming career, he took supporting jobs, as a station attendant/manager and truck driver.
