May 5, 2009-May 14, 2009 Andreas John Brunner, precious infant son of Ryan Brunner and Rochelle Nelson of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully in the arms of his family on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Andreas was born May 5, 2009 at 2:38 p.m. in Minneapolis, and died a few short days thereafter.
Sept. 6, 1930-May 16, 2009 Former Pipestone resident Betty L. Daniels, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes. Betty was born the daughter of John and Myrtle (Waters) McCorkell on Sept. 6, 1930 in Redwood County, Minne. She received her teaching degree from Mankato State University. Betty held her first teaching position in Wanda, Minn., and also taught in Filer, Idaho and Aberdeen, Wash. She then began her teaching career in Pipestone, where she met her future husband. Betty married Edwin D. Daniels at Redwood Falls, Minn.
July 27, 1939-May 14, 2009 Detroit Lakes native Matilda "Tillie" Hoffman, 69, of Osakis passed away at the Galeon Nursing Home in Osakis on Thursday, May 14, 2009. Tillie was born to Manley and Marion Smith of Detroit Lakes on July 27, 1939. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1958. She married Wayne Hoffman of Detroit Lakes on Aug.
Feb. 27, 1947-May 9, 2009 Patricia L. Anderson, 62, of Cass Lake passed away Saturday, May 9th, 2009 at the Fairview Medical Center in Minneapolis after a courageous battle with cancer. Patricia Lee Allen was born to Joseph and Ilene Allen on Feb. 27, 1947 in Cass Lake, Minn. Patricia has lived in Minneapolis, Macintosh and Glyndon, Minn., as well as Killeen, Texas, but for the majority of her life, Cass Lake was her home. Patricia graduated as valedictorian from Cass Lake High School in 1965.
Nov. 3, 1917-May 12, 2009 Mildred Iverson, 91, of Mahnomen, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen. Mildred Theresa Gerda Urdahl was born to Knute and Amanda (Thompson) Urdahl on Nov. 3, 1917 in their home in Flaxville, Mont. As a very young girl, she moved with her parents to their family home near Flom, Minn. She attended Sunny Hill School and later Twin Valley High School. Mildred worked as a waitress until she met and married Gerald Iverson on Nov. 11, 1944. They were married at Wild Rice Lutheran Church near Flom.
Aug. 30, 1922-May 14, 2009 Former Ada and Moorhead resident Vernon A. Stevens, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Vernon Albert Stevens was born to Harry and Jessie (Davidson) Stevens on Aug. 30, 1922 in Ada, Minn. He was raised and educated near Ada. Vernon later lived near Hibbing, Minn., where he worked in building construction. He moved to Moorhead in the mid 1950's and worked in commercial building construction. He worked as a caretaker for Moorhead State University from 1977 to 1992.
Jan. 23, 1968-May 13, 2009 Elizabeth A. Schmit, 41, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at her residence. Elizabeth Thomas was born to James and Susie (Hanson) Thomas on Jan. 23, 1968 in Detroit Lakes, where she grew up and attended Holy Rosary School. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1986. On Aug. 24, 1991 she married Steven Harstad in Detroit Lakes, where they made their home. Liz received her R.N. Degree and worked for St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, and most recently for the Frazee schools. On June 20, 1997 she married Tim Schmit.
June 21, 1921-May 13, 2009 Evelyn V. Kjono, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Evelyn Viola Hovland was born to Arthur S. and Milla (Watterud) Hovland on June 12, 1921 at Rothsay, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at South Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Rothsay. Evelyn married Calmer Kjono on Aug. 15, 1937 near Rothsay. They farmed at Rothsay for 13 years before moving to Pelican Rapids in 1950. Evelyn had worked at Simpson and Rybeck Bakery and a short time at the Recreation Center, then at Swan's Drug for 17 years.
May 26, 1958-May 2, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Carneil L. Johnson, 50, of Hartville, Mo., died Saturday, May 2, 2009 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near her home. Carneil LaRaye Priem was born to Jerry and Arlyss (Arneson) Priem on May 26, 1958. She grew up in the Frazee, Vergas and Detroit Lakes area. She attended school in Frazee and Detroit Lakes. Carneil married Danny Johnson and they resided in rural Detroit Lakes, where they raised their three children: Corey, Dustin and Bobbi Jo.
June 25, 1937-May 12, 2009 Duyane J. Foltz, 71, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Duyane was born the son of Joseph and Marie (Veik) Foltz on June 25, 1937, in Humphrey, Neb. At the age of 11, Duyane moved with his family to Frazee, where he continued his education, graduating in 1955. As a young man, Duyane enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 14, 1955. He served as a tail gunner on a B-36 during his time of service. Duyane married Faye Young on Dec. 9, 1958 in Puerto Rico, Mexico on the Ramey Air Force Base.
