Bonnie Kay Beaman, 50, Vergas, died in her home near Vergas on April 5, 2009. Bonnie Kay Schermerhorn was born on May 11, 1958, in Perham to Allan and Elaine (Stebbins) Schermerhorn. She grew up in rural Vergas on a farm, attended school in Perham, graduating from Perham High School. On June 3, 1978, she was married at the United Methodist Church in Dent and was married for 23 years. Bonnie was a hardworking woman. Over the years she worked at Goodman's Grocery Store, owned a mink farm, did daycare and most recently had her own cleaning business for the past several years.
Elton Arthur "Tommie" Thompson died April 4, 2009, in his home, surrounded by his family. Elton, son of Thomas and Gertrude Thompson, was born Dec. 26, 1914, in Ayr, N.D., and attended high school in McIntosh, S.D. He attended two years at the University of South Dakota before he moved to Milwaukee, where he met Mildred Soderberg. They got married June 24, 1939, in Milwaukee. WWII interrupted family life, and Elton served with the 11th Armored Infantry in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other commendations for his bravery and service.
Mary Nudell, 54, Pelican Rapids, formerly of Enderlin, N.D., died on Friday, April 3, 2009, in the Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Cancer Treatment Centers of America) in Zion, Ill. Mary Ann Metz was born Sept. 25, 1954, in Browns Valley, Minn., the daughter of James and Shirley (Ziemer) Metz. Mary graduated from Browns Valley High School. On Sept. 3, 1971, Mary was united in marriage to David Nudell in Sisseton, S.D. Mary and David owned and operated a farm in Enderlin until 200l when they sold the business to Olson Farms. She worked for Olson Farms from 2001 to present.
Robert Berg, 70, Detroit Lakes, passed away Saturday April 4, 2009, in Innovis Health in Fargo, N.D. Robert was born Nov. 5, 1938, to Arnold and Anna (Fraisl) Berg in Osakis, Minn. He graduated from Osakis High School in 1957. Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and received an honorable discharge in 1964. On June 15, 1960, he married Rita Roeckel. They moved to Alexandria, where he was employed by National Food Stores. In 1965, he moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area as manager of the National Food Store. He continued for many years to be associated with the grocery business.
Ronald E. Broberg Sr., 73, rural Detroit Lakes, died Friday, April 3, 2009, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, N.D. Ron was born on April 19, 1935, the son of Harry and Hulda (Dorff) Broberg in Audubon. He was raised and attended school in Audubon until the age of 13, when Ron's family moved to rural Detroit Lakes. As a young adult, Ron was active in Golden Gloves Boxing and worked for Addison-Miller Ice Company removing snow off the ice for the harvest. Ron was united in marriage to Marietta Johnson on June 8, 1957, in Assembly of God Church, Detroit Lakes.
May 13, 1915-April 1, 2009 Violet A. Palmer, 93, of Frazee, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center, surrounded by her children. Violet Alice Frank was born to Gottfried and Lena (Boehne) Frank on May 13, 1915 in Evergreen, Minn., where she spent her entire life. On Sept. 3, 1942, Violet married George Palmer. She was a member of St. Paul's Evergreen Ladies Aide. She enjoyed gardening, canning, traveling, listening to old-time music and dancing.
Aug. 15, 1940-March 30, 2009 Former Ponsford resident Alberta M. Johnson, 70, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Alberta Mae Jones was born to Thomas Sr. and Vivian (Fineday) Jones on Aug. 15, 1940 in White Earth. She attended Pine Point Elementary School and graduated from Park Rapids High School in 1959. She later went to Albuquerque, N.M., to attend nursing school, before moving back to the Rochert area. For several years she worked as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes.
July 7, 1922-April 1, 2009 Merlin M. Herzog Sr., 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Valley Memorial Homes in Woodside Village, Grand Forks, N.D. Merlin was born to William and Bertha (Johnson) Herzog on July 7, 1922 in Melbourne, Iowa. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School on May 29, 1941. In August 1942 he joined the United States Navy and served in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. He was part of the 293rd Joint Assault Signal Corps, 2nd Beach Battalion, attaining the rank of signalman first class. He was discharged on Dec. 24, 1945.
Former St. Paul resident Randall L. Mastenbrook, 61, of Deland, Fla., died March 24, 2009 at his residence. Surviving him are his wife Jill, of Deland, Fla.; two daughters, Karin (Jon Peterson) Mastenbrook of Detroit Lakes and Karlene Mastenbrook of Watertown, S.D.; one stepdaughter, Michele Young of Florida; two stepsons, Jason Young and Murphy Young, also of Florida; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Trent (Lynn) Mastenbrook, of Lino Lakes, Minn.; two sisters, Candice (Scott) Whelan of Minneapolis and Debbie (Bob) Wetterlin of Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sept. 3, 1921-March 26, 2009 Former Moorhead resident Odelia A. Kalvik, 87, of Lake Park, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park. Odelia "Ode" Amanda Kaastad was born to Ole and Dora (Kaaland) Kaastad on Sept. 3, 1921 in Hannaford, N.D. She was baptized at Union Lutheran Church in Hannaford and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City, N.D. Ode attended elementary school at Hannaford and graduated from Valley City High School in 1939. She worked for a time at Valley City State Teacher's College.
