Aug. 25, 1960-March 10, 2009 Former Ponsford resident David L. Stone, 48, of Walla Walla, Wash., died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Walla Walla. David Lee Stone was born to Eleanor Stone on Aug. 25, 1960 in White Earth. He was raised in Detroit Lakes until 1965, when David and his family moved to St. Paul, where he attended school. He worked as a mechanic in various states before settling in Washington State to be near his kids. On Sept. 21, 2002 David married Dorothy Walkiewicz in Las Vegas, Nev.
June 15, 1950-March 12, 2009 Rhonda Jokela Annette, 58, of Park Rapids, died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids. Rhonda Rhea Jokela was born the second child of Eddie and Lorraine Jokela on their third wedding anniversary, June 15, 1950. Her rural childhood days working on the family farm portrayed Rhonda's enthusiasm and love for animals and the outdoors. She began riding horses as a toddler and participated at area youth downhill ski camps, and was an accomplished seamstress.
June 19, 1916-March 13, 2009 Della E. Olson, 92, of Hawley, died Friday, March 13, 2009, in Hawley Senior Living, Hawley. Della was born to Severt and Sophie (Omberg) Olson on June 19, 1916 in Hawley, where she grew up and attended school. She worked for 34 years at Peterson Brothers' Department Store in Hawley, for 15 years at Burns Motor of Hawley and occasionally at the Garrick Theatre in Hawley. Della enjoyed dancing, playing cards and was an avid reader. She was a member of Solem Lutheran Church.
Nov. 20, 1922-March 15, 2009 Luverne M. Bergren, 86, of Lake Park, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2009, in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Luverne was born to Julius and Gertrude (Munder) Riebe on Nov. 20, 1922 in Frazee, where she grew up and married Walter Bergren in August 1943.
Audubon native Clare Gottenborg Byler, 107, died Friday, January 16, 2009 in Houston, Texas. Clare was born to Andrew and Anna (Boyer) Gottenborg in 1901 in Audubon. Clare and her husband, Ronald, made their home in Hoquiam, Wash., for 29 years. They were both teachers. Surviving Clare are her daughter, Karen Grover, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all of Houston. Her husband Ronald preceded her in death. She will be interred in Woodburn, Ore., next to her husband.
Sept. 14, 1925-March 13, 2009 Former Ponsford resident Florence E. Sunram, 83, of Frazee, died Friday, March 13, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. Florence E. Becker was born to Valentine and Jannette (Nugent) Becker on Sept. 14, 1925 in rural Osage, where she grew up and attended country school at the Becker School in rural Osage. She later attended school in Park Rapids, graduating from Park Rapids High School. She then attended Bemidji State Teachers College, where she received a teaching certificate.
July 3, 1917-March 10, 2009 Lois L. DelMain, 91, of Frazee, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. Lois Louise Evans was born to Fred and Mary (Gross) Evans on July 3, 1917 in Height of Land. She married Neville DelMain. They spent most of their lives in Frazee.
April 26, 1922-March 9, 2009 Wallace F. Mellum, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, March 9, 2009 at Innovis Health in Fargo. Wallace Frederick Mellum was born to Clayton O. and Martha (Bauer) Mellum on April 26, 1922 in Ulen. When he was five years old, his family relocated to Frazee. Wally grew up in the Frazee area, graduating from Frazee High School in 1940. After high school, he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill. In 1942, Wally enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Osprey in the Battle of Normandy.
Jan. 15, 1931-March 11, 2009 Bonnie L. Anderson, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Bonnie was born to Walter and Cecile (Bakken) Gottsman on Jan. 15, 1931 in rural Park Rapids. She grew up and attended school in Park Rapids, graduating from Park Rapids High School in 1948. On Oct. 22, 1949 she married Jerald Anderson in Dorset, Minn. Over the years they lived in Wadena, Deer Creek and Chokio, Minn., and also Tucson, Ariz. While in Deer Creek, they owned and operated the Deer Creek Café.
Jan. 17, 1921-March 10, 2009 Detroit Lakes native Willis L. Olson, 88, of Glyndon, Minn., died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at St. Mary's Innovis Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Willis "Willie" Olson was born to Nels and Hannah (Hanson) Olson on Jan. 17, 1921, in Shell Lake Township, Detroit Lakes. He grew up and attended school near Shell Lake. On June 14, 1945, he married Renilda Eitel in Sebeka, Minn. Together they lived in Detroit Lakes for a short time before moving to Glyndon in 1951. They remained in Glyndon until recently moving to Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
